He was so tuned in to how the scene needed to cut together that every little movement and inflection had to line up with what he needed the audience to feel at that moment. He took a billion takes cause he needed those specific little pieces cause you can't fool people's sub-consciouses.

Moviegoers pay good money to see a film. Considering how much more money actors piss away than the rest of us will ever see, we deserve the kind of perfection from them that Kubrick demanded. If you aren't willing to reshoot a scene until it's right, get the fuck out of this business we call show.
