The rise of build-to-rent homes in the United States has caused a big debate about the American Dream. It used to be all about owning a home and building wealth, but now more people are choosing to rent instead. This change makes some people worried that the idea of owning a home is getting less important. Some say build-to-rent homes meet the changing needs of society, while others think we're losing an important tradition that defines our country. This debate has a big impact on the American Dream and goes way beyond just houses.

Funny how they don't offer "rent to own". It's just "rent to rent". 🙃😑

Spoiler Alert: American dream is now to not be homeless. Rents are also so high, combined with inflation, make it nearly impossible to save anything for a down payment. This is a disaster.

We protested a developer wanting to build a huge neighborhood next to an elementary school, supposedly for sale but he finally admitted he'd keep some to rent. Comes to find out his last development was build-to-rent only. Thankfully, our city said no.

The American Dream is to purchase your own land and house, it’s not to rent from predatory land owners/landlords for the rest of your life! Why isn’t the Federal Trade Commission putting an end to the monopolization of rent prices? 😡

2/3 prefer to rent is a load of cr*p. Some people want to rent because ownership is not their thing but - home ownership is what most people want.

It's funny how these developers cry it's too expensive to build homes in this high interest rate environment, but there's plenty of money to spring up these build to rent communities.

It's going to be difficult to retire without a house that is paid off.

I worked at Progress Residential and I quit when realized how predatory their operations were. These companies are evil.

Chase bought 54k residential homes then sent us an email they would acquire 84k to "Help" employees live while working. We need to be buying land and building our own communities and growing gardens and really taking back the country from these corporations while trying to find something to put laws in place to prevent them from doing this. They're trying to force us to work if we don't work for their companies then we don't have a place to live.

So sad, I just bought a tiny cheap house to live in until I die. I want control over decor, remodeling, pets, parking, security. And, its something for my kids to sell for my future care or end of life expenses.

Remember that 2000 doesn't cover utilities or repairs. In those build to rent communities you are on your own and not allowed to do much. Oh and unlike 30 years ago, your rent is gonna go up every year.

Great job of exposing these corporations and their lies.

Absolutely agree! Most people don't want to rent, they want to buy AFFORDABLE homes! It's become ridiculous in all our years in Real Estate and my poor parents trying to honestly help people build and help their families with real estate. Greed has led to less supply and the government should take note because voters are watching what happens next.

I’ve never understood why people rent forever. My 80 year old friend never bought a home while living in Arizona for 30 years. I watched all her rent spike and she kept moving. Now she’s with her niece. She regrets never buying a home when she could. Sooo I don’t get it.

I can't believe this is now the "American Dream", more like a nightmare

How do we organzine against financial institutions and corporations to prevent them from buying homes and owning the homes they gave already bought?

It's a trap people will never get out of. I remember a story about 5 different rental companies buying up whole areas in different parts of the city. When they went up on rents people tried to move out by going to other rental companies they paid $400 in non refundable rental application fees for each of the 4 rental companies only 5 days later to be turned down so they ended up trapped paying the higher rent. Come to find out all 5 rental companies are owned by the same corporation so not only did the people pay the higher rent but they paid an additional $1600 to the same company. Now how messed up is that.

You are Exactly right! This rent to rent is a horrible idea. It’s like selling yourself into slavery.
