1. excellent guide!
2. For the Veritas wheel-style, you can get an extra little clip that lets you lock the distance between the wheels but still move the fence.

I'm sure that workd really accurately, personally though I get it just as accurately by just pushing down the chisel into the wood and then I've got the exact copy when I align the mortise chisel

Just make sure your chisel is square. If it's at an angle then the distance will be smaller
