Years ago, after Regans space war ended, where I was employed, we hired the project manager, and he and I became buds. He was a genius but down to earth guy.
We talked of lazers for cutting different materials and underwater explosion to weld disimilar metals.
Under Regan they could take down aircraft but not fastest missles or pinpoint a warhead long enough to disable.
A new program was begun and at a yearly salary of almost a million he left us.
About 8 months later he sent pics of Lazer destroyed weapons.
This was in late 1990s', soils been around for a while.
Israel was leading research at that time, so it was joint project.
So I was not taken by surprize when a couple years later upon reading rumors of used airborn or sateite lazer upon Palestinias in school yard.
Nor of type wounds found upon Iraqi rebels.

No mention of how many billions were invested to create this high tech gizmo. A sonic missle flying under 50 ft, with just a conventional warhead, could easily sink that ship.
