I worked for a DOD contractor before retiring a few years ago. We cut and polished a bunch of these really cool lenses. I of course had never been told nor did I ever ask what they were used for. But they had to be absolutely flawless . If a flaw was visible after being looked at with multiple types of light at serious magnification that lens was rejected and destroyed. I kinda think I may have a hint at what they were used for now

Another benefit of a laser is you don't have to lead a moving target. If you want to shoot down a jet moving at 600 MPH with a machine gun or missile, You have to shoot ahead of the target basically making the target run into the ordnance. With a laser, you can put the beam right on target and hit it as the beam is moving at the speed of light, faster than a bullet, missile or the jet.
