Those "birds" that kept you up at night were actually the invasive species of coqui frogs - tiny but loud.

Cool video! Great tip titles. The Big Island is amazing, one of the most wonderful places in the world ! I just returned from my second trip there. I was just at park in Hilo at 1:50 and 'Akaka Falls at 1:55 and 2:18. I think that's Puna Lu'u black sand beach at 3:02, and I was there too! And also at the Kona Safeway at 5:34. On my first trip years ago, I visited the Kealakekua Captain Cook monument at 5:44. I hope everyone gets to go and see the places for themselves too. Go to Hawai'i!!!

You might want to add some advice:
1) Bring an umbrella. It rains, alot and frequently and without warning. Also good for sun protection when trekking across lava-crossing shadeless trails.
2)Beware mosquitos. Bring mosquito repellant and a head net.
3) Beware the SUN. Bring "reef safe/approved" sunblock lotion and full coverage clothes. Long sleeve tee shirts and lightweight long trousers and a sun hat and sunglasses.
4)Pay attention to hydration. Carry water along in a reusable bottle...or even just recycle/reuse a disposable water bottle. You will be glad you did.
5) BRING A TOWEL even a small one. It is hot and often muggy.and humid too. You are going to sweat/perspire. Your forehead will feel so much cooler after swabbing with a towel. Aso makes a good neck sunshade when the rays start beating down.
