Marrying children was considered in poor taste back then, too.

If his first wife didn’t know, that’s not polygamy, that’s just adultery.

As a Nevermormon currently eating up exmo content I feel called out 😂

Also, if Joseph Smith’ first wife wasn’t happy with it and he was keeping it a secret, isn’t that just adultery (aka a sin)?

Marrying children has ALWAYS been wrong. In the 19th century, girls usually weren't available on the marriage market until they were at LEAST fifteen or sixteen, and even that was rare. Most girls didn't get married until they were about eighteen to twenty. Fourteen-year-olds were STRICTLY off limits for marriage.

The Never Mormon better be a recurring character cause she is all of us rn

Another thing to point out is that most of the women who were getting married younger were also marrying men around their same age, not men twice their age plus change.

There's a bit in Romeo and Juliet where Lady Capulet suggests Juliet gets married, and the general response is that she's too young. The gact that *Shakespeare* had to justify this as much as he did says a lot

I hate it when Mormons use the myth of "it was a different time. People married young back then." It wasn't that much different than the 1950s (18yos marrying after high school was pretty normal).

In the 1800s, when a child bride was married off, 9/10 it was to another child for land or whatnot, not someone twice their age for "religious purposes."

Yeah, my dad (still an active member) hates it when my brothers and I bring up that tidbit (mentally left when we were in primary, physically left when we were 18).

"There are instances of men marrying girls under the age of eighteen from Jospeh Smith's time"

Yeah and there are instances of that happening today, that doesn't mean it isn't gross and wrong.

This is your reminder that several states STILL don’t have laws against child marriage. Theoretically it’s for couples who get pregnant at 16 and 17 and want their child to be born in wedlock and right with the church or for oh so romantic cases like ‘a walk to remember’.

… without any protections in place to keep people from just giving their child away to a much older man.

Yep. I remember in young women's being asked, would you like a man like Joseph Smith? And my autistic masked self said maybe. Everyone else said yes. We were 14.

I like the little detail of the nose ring and how you take it off every time you play the Mormon, that's some dedication to accuracy.

Thank you for exposing cults. People are emotionally mislead. Feelings are.not facts.

It's been a long time since I studied this. But what got me is the women that were already married. And Joseph would send the men on long distance missions and then take their wives.

I listen to what usually happens with cult leaders & access to women seems to be their number one goal.
