🤷‍♂️Context🤷‍♂️
In S06E11, the horseman Death went to Hell to retrieve and insert Sam's soul back into his body as part of a deal with Dean. Fast forward to now, Castiel, in Season 6, has been at war with Raphael to see who gets dominion over Heaven, becoming the new God. To end the civil war once and for all, he makes a deal with Crowley to find and open Purgatory, with each of them getting half of the souls that reside within, making both of them immensely powerful. Bobby, Dean, and Sam are working to find out how to stop them from opening the gates. During this time, Sam and Dean refused to accept that what he was doing was right and kept interfering with his plans, so he gave them an ultimatum: go home and let him open Purgatory, or he tears down the wall within Sam's mind that holds back the hell his soul carries. They choose the former, and Sam wakes up with no memory of who he is or where he is. On his path to remembering who he is, he walks into a forest after hearing some twigs crack, leading to him meeting soulless Sam, which then leads him here, to the Sam that remembers Hell.

I feel bad for Sam. Knowing that in the final episode of season 6 and for almost the entirety of season 7, he had to live with the nasty memories of the cage and have hallucinations of Lucifer. It got so bad to the point where he couldn't even fall asleep, because Lucifer kept yelling in his head.

It's sad that everyone, even himself, thinks he isn't strong enough, when really he's the strongest one if all

Its so horrible seeing Sam's trauma being manifested and even then it's telling him to not open that door

Compared to dean that spend roughly like 40 years in hell and spent at least 10 years torturing others rather than being tortured. Whereas Sam spent something like 100+ years the Lucifer himself. The guy who sent him back to hell and stoped Micheal and Lucifer to have their prize fight. Oh you bet Lucifer spent every single second torturing him in ever single sadistic way possible. No s*** he started to have sever PTSD after regaining his memories. Even cas says his very soul is mutilated. Thank god that cas repented his wrongful ways and cured same.

And that's because they can't show us the real picture.. Cass said his soul felt like he was skinned alive

The weirdest part is he start hallucinating Lucifer next season

Basically in this moment, Sam was in his own "mindscape" (a pocket dimension of sorts) and there were 3 sams roaming around his mind.
True sam, Soulless Sam, and Hell Sam.
True Sam first ran into Soulless Sam who wanted to k*ll True Sam and take over because he was a better hunter (or something like that). But True Sam won and eventually ran into Hell sam, the same who was stuck inside a hellish cage where Lucifer and Michael were also in there with him, causing him to break and go insane.

Imagine if instead of saying all that, Tortured Sam begged for death. Imagine seeing Sam with the hesitation of “this is me, begging to die from what happened in the cage. Fuck.” And then he knows he has to kill him to wake up and remember.
Which would be more nerve racking? Having yourself explain you ain’t strong enough to handle the torture? Or seeing yourself literally beg you for the sweet release of death

This scene would've been much more impactful if the Hell Sam was completely non-verbal and twitchy, like the stuff that happened in the cage turned him entirely insane. Instead of that point being given to us in blatant exposition.

Can you imagine having a dream and talking to yourself? And the other you tells you that there's certain things you forgotten. And he doesn't want you to remember because he knows it'll hurt you too much.

Sam in cage: gets a buzz cut and realizes he doesnt have the head shape for it and demons slap him in the back of his head, chanting fresh cut for all eternity

I do like this aspect of supernatural that hell is so bad it’s indescribable and the only thing anyone mortal is able to say about it is that it’s the worst thing you could possibly imagine

Gods this was a great episode. I remember feeling tense knowing that Sam would have to deal with the memories of the cage but I never expected what was to come for him in the next season.

"Which one are you?"

"The one who couldn't find the shower."

that "you're gonna need it" sounded like dean for a second

Always remember trust your other self when they tell you they have seen hell and don’t want to go through with it

To quote Meg in Sam's body: "pathetic." lol

For hell sam, that was literally nothing comparatively

Really liked that there wasn't some big edgy blow out fight between this memory and real Sam.
