This is probably the best explanation I’ve ever seen

Its the same as holding ur nose while trying to speak. When air moves 1 place, more air has to replace that where it once was, the air has to come from somewhere else. So if u cover the part where the air has to enter, u create low pressure on the inside or a slight vacuum, causing the diaphram to have limited movement. And with holding ur nose, u push out air when u speak, and if u cover ur nose, the air goes out, but nothings comes in, causing low air pressure.

-They are also for transparency mode, allowing you to hear people talking to you while you have your airpods in-

Edit: No it's not, It's actually your microphones that amplify it back to you. The only advantage to having those holes is to allow for the sound to pass through the air and into your ear, creating a more natural sound.

I don’t have any vents on my head. I suppose I can cover my ears

The vents also contain microphones and an infrared sensor on the inside. This is how it knows whether it’s in your ear or not. That and the accelerometers built into the pods themselves.

Fun fact: your wireless charging case also has an accelerometer. Tap the case when on a wireless charging pad and it’ll tell you the charge status.

Not only that but the AirPods Pro have a feature that control air pressure inside your ear and the air comes from these vents

They have vents for EarPods as well for good base

My AirPods sends the sound outwards, like if you sat in the same room as me across the room I wouldn’t need full volume for you to hear it

To me, it also has something to do with the pressure buildup in your ear to equalize pressure from inside and outside the ear. Closed back headphones and IEM’s exist and some have no vents yet they still can produce good sound quality.

Also AirPods pros doesn’t trap air in the ear canal which makes you forget that you are wearing them which is awesome 😍🥰

diaphragm is probably not the best word to use to describe it. It's a membrane like the eardrum (tympanic membrane)

...this is literally how all modern headphones (specially IEMs) work

Actually that’s wrong :0
If you do that you are basically pushing in the air pod into your ear which gives you that plug in your ears when you go to the mountains or go under water but these are the microphones go too transparency mode or Anc & you can brush (easy too not hurt your ears or get a weird squeak) on the same mesh & you will here your finger brush against the microphone & yes it has more then 2 2 in each big mesh & integer 2 at the bottom of the tail depending on how old your pro 2 are but.. the mesh above the sensor facing up to your hair is what lets air in & acts like the vent & gives it room to breath in order to give you bass when listening to you’re music & to give you the personal Spatial Audio as well as defining your headphones when hash wind is taking place :)

They arw what you call "open backs", it allows sound in so that you can here around, but open backs are ment to be used in quiet rooms primaraly, but becaue these have noice canceling, they are more possibilities

If you have AirPods Pro 2 cover the top vent to change the sound

Honestly I thought it was for noise cancellation, I didn’t even know it was a vent lol

I would have guessed on the Pros to balance out the pressure from the silicone tip
