Why Apple's Headphones Have Extra Holes In Them

You may not pay much attention to your Apple EarPod headphones. You put them in your ears, crank up the tunes, then head to the gym or wherever. But if you've ever looked closely at the earbuds, you'd notice a few extra holes in the plastic. But what are they there for? They're not the microphone, that's located on the remote. The holes are actually there to let in air. This helps the speaker move more freely, creating deeper bass notes and better acoustics.

Back in the day we called those holes bass reflex ports. HiFi speakers have had those for many decades.

All earbuds and earphones have this. It's nothing special to Apple headphones.

those vents work as bass reflex ports and the dimensions of the earphones are calculated according to the wavelength of the bass sounds to enhance the low frequency response in the Audio.

Lol, I never realized I had Apple earphones.
I just found mine on the street and I've been using them since last summer not knowing what they are. At least I learnt something new from this video. 🎵

Air doesn't "build up". It's the same difference between a sealed or ported speaker box. The sealed box doesn't rise in pressure, the pressure just changes due to rapid air volume/capacity changes from the cone either expanding outward (lowers pressure) or flexing inward (raises pressure). It's not like the earbuds would pop from pressure if they were sealed, it would just take more wattage to achieve a similar decibel level.

I know this is on most earphones but EarPods are the best example to show it since everyone knows what it looks like
