She's part of the future I have been hoping for. We cannot go back to the antebellum divisiveness of the past. One day, there won't be any more "first". It'll just be glorious in its normalcy. We can give to each other the serenity and security of being, all, citizens of a United States of America. No matter the culture we may claim, or hyphenate, we must realize that the " American" culture is ever growing, changing, and adapting. That is what our greatness is, and it's found in each of us. My mother dragged herself out of poverty and worked her way to officer in the Navy in the 1960s. She met my father, a Naval submariner. When they married my mother had to give up her career, everything she had worked for, and become fully dependent on my father. She never got over it. At 88 she still calls her naval career the greatest achievement of her life. From Naval Officer to Retail Assistant, just because she got married. Those were the rules. We won’t go back.
