Liquitex Heavy Body vs. Soft Body Acrylics

Wondering which Liquitex Professional Acrylic formulation is right for you? Consistency, format, coverage, color, your style, and the technique you want to use should all be considerations when choosing an acrylic format.

While Liquitex Professional Heavy Body and Soft Body Acrylics contain compatible binders and the same high pigment load, if you thin Heavy Body with water or medium, you reduce concentration and get noticeably weaker colors. In fact, the flowing, low viscosity Soft Body formula was developed first—so if you thought Soft Body was just a watered-down version of the Heavy Body formula, you’d be wrong.

So, what’s the difference?

Heavy Body offers a thick, rich, oil paint-like thickness. Squeezed from a tube, it holds marks and can be applied with a knife or brush.

Soft Body comes in a bottle and is designed to be applied with a brush or sponge. It has a flowing, mid viscosity formula perfect for fine details or large area coverage.
