divide 2r into r+r in series
rc=r+((1+sqrt(5))/2)r
rc/r=(3+sqrt(5))/2=2.61

Repeated circuit equivalent is R(1.62). It is parallel with R. which gives R(1.62)/2.62 and this is in series with 2R.
Upon dividing with R, it gives 2+ (1.62/2.62) . solving this it gives 2.61

first we have to take for the 2nd circuit that is Req= R+(R || Req).
Then taking the value and apply to the first circuit that s Re= 2R+(R || Req ), Here in the place of Req put the result of previous Req , and solved .. The ans is 2.61

The homework question is little bit tricky after one ladder... It makes ladder of infinite resistance R.
Now let Req is the equivalent resistance for infinite ladder which gived equation (Req^2-RReq-R^2) after solving this we get Req= (R+2R√2)/2.
Now Re is the equivalent resistance of whole ladder network.
So Re= (Req||R) +2R after solving this
Re/R = (7+6√2) /(3+2√2)
Re/R = 2.65ohm will be the answer.

Most of you are assuming some value to R in the homework, but the problem is not telling you that, it only says "R". So: the infinite leader of "R and R" its equal to: Rinf=R((-1+sqr(5))/2) => Rinf is in series with 2R so Re = Rinf + 2R and the result required is: Re = R * ((3+sqr(5))/2). If you substitute R by 1ohm you got the result 2.618... but I think in this problem numerical result it's not required, but yes a general letters result. Thanks for your classes.

Seperate 2R as R+R
Since we know the infinite circuit resistance is (1+sqrt(5))/2.
Req=R+R(1+...)/2
Ans=2.62

Just add 1ohm to entire infinite circuit resistance i.e 1.6 so ans is 1+1.6=2.6
No need other calculations

Req = R+(R of ∞) = R+R×1.618
Req = R(1+1.618)
Req = R × 2.618
Req/R = 2.618 ≈ 2.62

value of equivalent resister is (3+squreroot of 5)/2

The value of infinite would b 1.62 ohm we know that, so if we divide 2r to r + r, since we know infinite ladder would b 1.62 and adding 1 to it would bring the answer, like a seriers resistor connect to a equivalent, same will happen if 3r is in seriers, 2+req = 2+1.62= 3.62
