I'm all for a tile floor in the kitchen. I want to be able to easily clean, and not worry about water spilling. I use a chefs mat in front of my range, since that is where I spend the most time.

Just gonna say that you don't use enough photos to illustrate your points. As a person who isn't familiar with all the design terms, when you say one thing, but don't directly represent that idea visually, it makes it really hard to keep up with you. Then I either have to let it pass me by, or take the effort to pause the video, find an example (which may or may not be what you meant), only to then come back and do it all over when you say the next unfamiliar term 3 seconds later.

Tl;dr: please use more photos.

My flat face cabinet doors work well in my 1958 midcentury modern home. Bonus: they're so easy to clean!

Shaker cabinet face seemed obvious to me BUT the bathroom vanity that came with the apartment has shaker doors and I have never been able to get the inner corners clean ( toothbrushes, toothpicks, microfiber) - includingwhen i stripped, primed and painted theme. 🤨 And that is just dust. I cannot imagine getting kitchen grease out of Shaker corners. So, I choose to stay with the flat front kitchen doors that came with the apartment. The colors I painted them and the hardware I swapped out give it enough of a traditional / farmhouse / French countryside look for now.

I wish you'd mentioned double kitchen islands in this video. I don't get why anyone not running a professional catering business out of their kitchen, would want two kitchen islands. They've become so trendy lately, but i think they look ridiculous in a home kitchen.

On the whole I agree with you. That said, a few of these recommendations are only possible if you build a fully custom kitchen. My builder didn’t allow me to run countertop to backsplash so I opted for a timeless honed marble picket backsplash, sealed it very well, and added decorative cutting boards behind the cooktop so I could protect it from cooking messes. Cutting boards are easily replaced. It’s been a year and so far it’s working out well for us. Plus the honed marble has minimal veining and is timeless so I have no regrets.

Biggest mistake people do in kitchen renos: they don't install drawers under the counters. It's much easier to get stuff out from the back if you have drawers. Best thing I ever installed in my kitchen. Keep cupboards for your uppers and don't do open shelves around your cooking area.

Nothing beats tile in the kitchen, sorry. I have washed the kitchen from so many things over the years and having anything but tile would lead to a floor replacement five times over by now. There is so much choice in tile and stone at this point that you can have the tile look like anything.

As a Mom to many ....I love my tile floor and would never have anything else. A wood floor in the kitchen would be a nightmare to me.

I've always loved the flowthrough wood in the entire home (minus bathroom) my parents have always had stone and so true about it hurting your feet!!

I have wood for my kitchen floor and termites ate some areas. Luckily I saved some replacement boards and I was able to repair. I love the feel of real wood but I would never use it in a kitchen. I would get LVP instead.

In regards to kitchen islands being "outdated" and "never having enough counter I am a weirdo when it comes to kitchens(which I freely admit and accept): I PREFFER smaller and galley style kitchens completely separate from the rest of the space. I say that as someone who does cook nearly every day and enjoys just like the efficiency of having EVERYTHING "at hand" or just a few steps away, as opposed to constantly having to navigate around the island. But I also don't use and therefore don't buy/collect a lot of "small appliances" and other counter space coffee pot, no microwave, no toaster, no blender, no mixer, no knife block, I said, I'm a wierdo, lol

I love your design tips because they are also practical. Do you think the waterfall edge for countertops is also a trend that will pass in some short years?

Phoenix, it amazes me how much I agree with your design advice and ideas. #1: I hate subway tiles!!! Finally, a professional designer who gets it! 👏 I love the images you chose of designs you like. My fantasy kitchen would have wood paneled appliances, flat horizontal woodgrain modern uppers that lift upwards (hydraulic, soft close), black lowers, a black Lacanche stove on the island, white quartzite (or similar) counters, and a beautiful hardwood floor. No cabinet hardware, brass wall sconces and sink fixtures, white apron sink, a generous coffee garage, and a built-in doggy area for bowls and stuff. Oh, and lots of plants!😁 Whaddaya think?
