Pool Shock | How Often & How To Shock Your Swimming Pool | Pool Chemistry 101

In this video I discuss all about shock, what it means, how to do it, and some situations where it makes sense to shock your swimming pool. Pool stores say you have to shock your pool weekly to keep the pool clean, clear and safe. This is NOT true. You do not have to do this each week in order to keep your pool safe to swim in. Often times, when you balance out your chemicals each week all you'll need is a maintenance dose of your chlorine of choice to keep the pool clean!

Stay tuned for more videos!

At what ppm of free chlorine would be considered shocking a pool, if the cya is in the ideal range? Pool I’m servicing needs to be ready to swim 7 days a week so can’t wait 24 hours for the chlorine level to come back down to normal or anything like that.

You should have talked about a non chlorine shock. Like potassium monopersulfate. I’m not a big fan of leslies but they sell a product called fresh and clear. It works really well! It oxidizes everything!!

Right now in Texas it's 100 degrees daily. I will typically add cal-hypo and tablets to any pool below 3ppm. Do you think that's right? Also, what about salt pools? Should I shock them below that point? What do you think about tablets in a salt pool when it's really hot as a buffer?

"As needed", is sound advice. A one hundred pound bucket can last months over the winter and early spring in Central Florida. And then the summer comes and all of a sudden I'm burning through a hundred pounds a week. Our weather can be vicious, but it's better to get in front of the bad stuff than to deal with the aftermath.
