George Doran has been credited with coining the phrase SMART objectives back in 1981. Since then, the acronym has evolved with the letters meaning slightly different things to different people.

SMART objectives are a form of objective setting which helps managers and employees to deliver positive results for the business as well as creating opportunities for growth and learning along the way

Unfortunately not enough managers practice the use of SMART objective setting and this can severely hinder organisational progress and employee development
