Blackmagic Design PYXIS Monitor First Look

At IBC 2024 in Amsterdam, I caught up with Blackmagic Design to have a look at their new PYXIS Monitor. The PYXIS Monitor is a 5″ HDR touchscreen monitor with full camera control. This is a good move by Blackmagic Design considering the PYXIS doesn't come with any LCD or flip-out LCD screen.

Brilliant! The Pyxis is the perfect step up from the Pocket series. When considering all factors, probably the best camera in the world at present.

Being forced to power two screens out of an NPF battery just to operate the camera normally seems like a horrible idea. The price point for the screen is amazing though, too bad they didn't think of this in the design stage.

Imagine this camera with a minimalist control display (like the KOMODO's) and THIS detachable monitor included at under $3, 000.00 would have been a killer offer.

They should at least add the ability to map a power ON/OFF button for the camera screen to save on power when you don't need it (which will likely be most of the time). That at this point they hadn't considered it is absolutely baffling.

It would be great if BMD update firmware for the pocket cameras to make use of the new monitor. I own the new PODTECH pocket 6k and 4k mod which my favorite camera and this is from a guy who has owned everything from RED to mirrorless and I can honestly say that the only downside to that mod is the dimly lit 400 not pocket screens. I would love to incorporate the new BMD monitor into my PODTECH build. I would have them omit the monitor portion of the mod and simply mount the new BMD monitor to my Tilta cage via the USB-C port on the pocket.

Again I love my PODTECH Mods.

Geat stuff...but do we have a release date for the camera, or not yet?

Now release the cheaper g2 without side monitor and its perfect
