VITAL SIGNS Assessment for EMTs

Obtaining vital signs is crucial as part of your patient assessment plan as an EMT or EMS provider. When taught EMS education, it's important to understand the different vital signs you will obtain as an EMT or Paramedic.

Once you obtain vital signs as an EMT/Paramedic, you will then determine whether the patient is stable or unstable at the moment. This finding can alter your transport decisions, whether you seek more assistance, and even how fast you transport to the hospital.

First responders such as fire department personnel or emergency medical responders will also gain insight into EMS vital signs and the patient assessment.

Blood pressure, heart rate and pulse, respiratory rate, blood glucose level, pulse oximetry (SPO2), end-tidal CO2 (capnography) and other pertinent vital signs will be discussed in this vital signs for EMTs video.

I look forward to seeing your success in class, out in the field as an EMS provider and on NREMT exam, keep going!

Be Great,

Evan, The Paramedic Coach®

Every diabetic is different we once had a diabetic with AMS and she locked herself in the bathroom her daughter convinced her to come out and we got a BGL of 25 she was still walking around and refused IV from the paramedics she instead drank orange juice mixed with glucose

Also skin condition is important too, pale cool and diaphoretic is a sign of shock

can you make a video going more in depth on types of shock and the types of signs and symptoms that go with each kind?

Your videos are very helpful! Do you by chance have a video on when to use BVM or a NRB? On the NREMT, they gave a lot of scenarios of which one to use and it tripped me up!

I like these videos but I’d like to see examples of if these vitals where to drop or rise and what you would do if this happens as a emt for example if I’m transferring a patient and there BP dropped what would I do to improve their BP as a EMT

5:23 respirations for 13-8yo should probably be 12-20 breaths per minute.
