If I Knew Then What I Know Now: A Three Part Webinar Series

AMATYC’s founding president, Herb Gross, reflects on what might have happened if the Internet had been in existence in 1974 when AMATYC was founded. He will share with us his ideas as to what AMATYC might do to help bring to fruition his vision that the community college is different than, but equal to, the university in its importance to the nation.
This second webinar will discuss the implications of the common student comment “The algebra course was easy. I could do everything except the word problems”. Sadly in the textbook of life there are only word problems (which, ironically in basic algebra can always be solved without the aid of algebra!). To help students learn to internalize algebra better, Herb will share with us his concept of teaching algebra as a game in which the rules are the axioms of arithmetic (the field axioms) and the objective is to discover the inescapable consequences that follow logically from these rules.

Professor Gross,
I came over here from your videos on OCW MIT on Calculus Revisited. I just want to say I'm profoundly grateful for those videos. You are an excellent tutor and explain calculus concepts amazingly. I'm based out of Mt Laurel, New Jersey and would love to meet you personally if you are ever in the area. Thank you once again for those amazing videos.
