When Ms Mavis opens her mouth, Truth and Goodness come out. That’s quite a talent to have. God bless her.

The timbre of a classic black voice and presentation ALWAYS warms my heart, makes me so appreciative and enriched and privileged. I can't even imagine rock/folk not forever married to southern black gospel. It's so humbling...thank you.

If class could be bottled, you'd call the concoction Mavis.

never thought there would be another version to compare with the one in the last waltz, but here it is. only one thing in common between the two.

I first heard of, and saw Mavis Staples on a DVD video of a live concert performance (in 2016, or around then) with a large group of other performers. It was a tribute to the late Levon Helm, called ‘Love for Levon’ in Rutherford, NJ. ‘The Weight’ was the last one done at the end of the show with her and all the others who were there. I’ve liked her ever since then, and now have other videos that she’s done. I also ‘discovered’ at that time some others I wasn’t familiar with, like Roger Waters, Ray La Montaigne (? sp.), Grace Potter, and some more. Stevie Nicks was there, as well as more artists who I did know of. BTW: Mavis did a great performance of ‘I’ll Take You There’ during another one of her own concerts. I’m 67 now, and was a classical pianist and organist since I was 5, but like all genres of music (except for rap and ‘real’ heavy metal type music), but it’s difficult for me to even try to put her style of singing into any one category - she’s in a class of her own!
