AI is more than just a bad guy in sci-fi films. How close are we to creating computers that actually think on their own?

"You can't code in human consciousness from the ground up"

I don't see why not?

stephen hawking just told the bbc "the development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race"

Some really nice animation in this one.

You have to understand AI isn't artificial and machine intelligence is already present. The perception of machine consciousness is something different all together than human intelligence; it's a unique class of it's own

Forget about the computer.  This guy could talk for England.

I figure in order to build a conscious computer we must fully understand consciousness.
More likely we'll blow ourselves up before that happens.

Not AI but AC (Artificial Consciousness) is more than just a bad guy in sci-fi films, because there are a lot of intelligent bad guys in the world... just a thought.

I love this Episode so much! Hope more is coming :)

it's a good question and I'm interested to see what the future will bring us... i guess there will be much resistance especially by people not knowing anything about it - saying that as a german with a chancellor who calls the almost 40 years old Internet "Neuland" which is very sad.

Well, the biggest problem we would be encountering is: is the computer actually aware of what he is doing? Will it still be a blind algorithm of commands? To see what I mean by this, Google "the Chinese room experiment", wherein someone functionally speaks Chinese without knowing what they are saying. The term we want computers to come to is excentrical thinking, not simulating the brain.

My hypothesis is that consciousness is fundamental in the universe and that the brain is more a transceiver and antenna than it is a processor and memory storage device. As such, the challenge may be misunderstood: we need to find out how to develop an antenna that can access consciousness rather than a computer that creates it. Our best shot in my view is to along the lines of bioengineering  rather than computer engineering.

How about instead of creating computers like humans, we create humans like computers? :O

Before this happen we have to nuke that location when they even get remotely close. We can't get even close. We can't end up with terminator situation.

Yes, we will probably be able to. The fear for AI only reflects the fact we all know: humans are monsters, parasiting any specie and environment we encounter. The fear of thinking robots is just that, we know how selfish and egoistic we are, so it's not unreasonable to think that robots would treat us the same.
It's in an essence just a debate with our own conscience.

Watched Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Can confirm, making humans is possible. Can discourage, they always wanted murder. :C
