I think the main issue is that when a robot begins to demand its rights and appears to be feeling pain or negative emotions, it is nearly impossible to tell whether they are legitimately feeling pain as a human would, or if they are still inanimate objects just simulating how a human or animal would act in their scenario

If robots ever become self-aware, then our best course of action would be to welcome them into our culture. We have so much to gain from adding them to us instead of dominating them. Movies and other fiction aside history shows that sooner or later, those we try to dominate soon rebel, and it almost always becomes way more trouble than it's worth. That being said, a contingency plan in case things go south is not unreasonable.

Its crazy how we are discussing rights for technology, while in other parts of the globe they are discussing rights for women, animals, and even human beings of a different ethnicity. 

The world is so connected yet so...not.
