The pirates were led by Jean Lafitte, a notorious slave trader, smuggler, and buccaneer. The Treaty of Ghent, signed in Belgium, ended the War of 1812 - as you point out - well before the Battle of New Orleans. But it did indeed propel Jackson to hero status.

Being Irish what I learned about the war of 1812 onwards is that it was a county down man led the invasion and the burning down of Washington and it was a meath man who led to the invasion of new Orleans but both died in battle
