Im so scared to get surgery because ive worked in a neuro floor and seen the complications of back surgery. I am going back and forth on what to do.

Thank you soooo much for helping me decide on surgery. After 32 years of sciatica, foot drop, pain, numbness and weakness, along with urinary and fecal incontinance at times, I was diagnosed with spondylolisthesis and stenosis of L4-L5 and S1. I'm 65 nownand feel cheated out of a normal life while raising my kids etc. So many things I couldn't do with my family because I couldn't stand that long, walk that long or be far from a bathroom. I finally got diagnosed with a neurogenic bladder as well. Why? Why did Dr's always tell me it didn't look bad enough? Why did they think they could just drug me up? I couldn't tolerate ANY of the psych drugs, Gabapentin, muscle relaxers etc. Instead, I've gotten by with Ibuprophen, stretching and doing my own physical therapy because no one would help me. I realize after all this time with no intervention I may have permanent nerve damage. I was underweight until age 45 but becuse I've become much more imobile, I now weigh 188 and they try to blame it all on my weight. It started immediately after my daughter was born and I weighed 135 when I left the hospital. I got back down to 108 in 6 months. Drs are destroying peoples lives with the blame the patient games they play. Some people give up and choose not to go on. Now you have given me even more hope for a better quality life and finally being able to exercise Thanks and God Bless You!!!

Im 52 and have had back issues since 27. I've had five back surgeries (two fusions, fused from L3 though S1), and have had my neck fused too, C3-C5. I did everything i could before my fusions, but finally felt I really needed them. I agree with everything you said. I didn't want fusions, and of course i was nervous with each of them, but my quality of life is exponentially better. I workout regularly, ride motorcycles, camp, hike, swim, etc. Definitely glad I opted for my fusions, given the alternative of a life full of arm and leg pain and numbness.

Dr, first of all thank you, Dr, 3 months ago I had L4-l5 minimally invasive lumbar fusion surgery, the pain going down my two calves and feet with burning when I walk is almost unbearable, what do you recommend please, what should I talk to my surgeon, what do you think is happening? Thanks

Thanks Dr. Mustafa for your enlightening and very good explanation of the 4 myths. Actually I was inclined to believe some of the myths, that is why I still have not decided to undergo ACDF surgery for my radiculopathy. I am also confused why some of the spine surgeons I consulted with recommended 3 level ACDF and some said 4 level ACDF plus back operation. I don't know the reason why I still need a back surgery for the 4 level ACDF. I don't want a complicated surgery and want as much as possible a minimally invasive surgery. Since I am from Guam, I was wondering if I can have an online consultation with you? I have my MRI results and can provide you my email for further communication. I have been watching almost all your nice and helpful videos and liked it much. Thanks.
