I practice this for an hour every week, along with everything else in your app. Keep it coming, MotoJitsu!

Excellent advice! One of the first things my bro taught me 20 years ago. Practice in a parking lot a bunch of times. This will save your life!

Assuming dry road with no passenger a rear brake is almost useless on a sportbike during HARD braking. As soon as you slide the rear tire and it gets out of line with the front, you loose your ability to stay in control under hard braking. Feather the rear brake or don't even use it. A HUGE factor is if you have a passenger and 2nd thing, almost as important, are you on a sport bike or heavy touring bike. I'm 55 and have ridden mostly sport bikes for 35 years. Most bikes, especially sportbikes with more forward weight, can go from 0 brake to full front brake in less then a second. Each bike is a little different and I always practiced quick stops. Both while cornering and straight stops. Especially on non ABS bikes.

Literally the best way to know that you can effectively use all your braking power is to hit up a parking lot and do a mini stoppie. If you cant stoppie there is a ton of braking power being left at the table. Using more rear brake does you no good because now you crashed because you skidded your rear tire and have no idea how to control that. Only use rear brake to initiate the braking and relieve rear brake pressure as the front dives and you gain more traction on front tire. Otherwise my rear brake only get used to come to a stop at a stoplight

True. I started practicing this drill since the day after this short came out, and definitely you can sense how the motorcycle feels more balanced/stable/grounded at the moment of reaching 100% with the front brake, to the point of doing full stops without removing the feet from the pegs. It also helps a lot to learn/improve revmatching.

Thank you Greg.

Yep! Learned this in a safety class in 1989 at Travis AFB. Great instructors we had back then!!

I am currently having motorcycle classes in my country, which also includes emergency breaking. This is indeed the best way to do it as this was also recomended in the class. And motorcycle lessons are obligatory in my country, and cover really much time and practise.

That depends on the bike. On a cruiser, where the weight is more evenly distributed, you need to combine front and rear brakes. Every bike is different! Best to practice in a parking lot with it to get it right (which this guy will also say is a good place to start).

Comes natural to me but the newbies need this info

Recently stepped off 2013 GSXR 1000 onto 2016 R1, the R1 has combined braking ( apply front brake /rear brake is applied by braking system) but I’m so used to this method I still use it.
