United Methodist Church split impacting area Congregations

It is a turbulent time for United Methodist Church members. Congregations have until the end of the year to decide if they want to remain with the UMC or disaffiliate.

As a for UMC pastor, now a GMC pastor this story misses the mark. The reason for the split is because the UMC leaders would not back our Book of Discipline when it came to our laws. Our UMC leaders failed us big time. It is also about more than the gay issue. It also is about how the UMC in many cases does not see the bible as God's inerrant word or how some pastors don't even recognize the resurrection or the divinity of Christ. The important thing is we remain Methodist. Just not UMC.

The Bible is very clear. To obey God and his laws, the stance to be taken is obvious. This doesn’t mean all human life isn’t valued or that kindness isn’t expected of Christians. But it does mean to obey God first and foremost in all things.

The basic problem is : Do you believe the Bible or not? GMC believes the Bible and what it has to say about marriage, homosexual acts, and other biblical truths. The UMC has decided the Bible is not the word of God and will not follow Biblical direction.

There is no room for progressive thought or liberal opinion in the Bible or with God’s laws. To disobey and not submit to God’s will is a sin. To turn your back on God’s teachings is a sin. We don’t get to cherry pick what we will and will not obey. We will all face our final judgement in front of God in the end. Choose wisely of spiritual matters and avoid worldly ones.

You might notice that both sides disagree over what they are disagreeing about.
This District Supt. thinks this is limited only to homosexuality.

The traditionalists I know are leaving on the grounds of scriptural authority and violations of the discipline at the very top. We can’t even agree about what we disagree about…

So this is how it went:
1: Methodist church enforces its ban
2: Conservate church disaffiliates because the church won't enforce the ban.
3: Liberal churches stay even though they enforced the ban.
4: Everything is backwards.
5: Me, A Catholic, trying to see how this makes any sense

The issue may not just be about homosexuality. I think the progressives will work to weaken the traditional position on Abortion once the pro-life Churchs leave the denomination. Historically the Church has taken a hard line against gambling and drug use. The UMC does not allow alcohol at its functions for example. That might not be as press-worthy as sexuality, but those hard-line traditional positions may change once the church loses its more fundamentalist congregations.

Hopefully UMC can avoid what happened with the Episcopal Church where it would have been a peaceful parting had it not been for Katharine Jefferts Schori, the former Presiding Bishop, and her chancellor, David Booth Beers, who led a scorched-earth policy against those churches who wanted to realign with global Anglicans. I pray the Methodists do not make the same mistake.

Since the worldwide UM church is more conservative, wouldn’t the shrinking of the more liberal American component only strengthen the conservative worldwide body?

There wouldn’t be any problems if everyone would be obedient to God’s word. It’s clear on the topic of sexuality.

The Last Day prophecies are being fulfilled. Thank God he still has people that will follow his words. (Revelation 18:4) "And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins and that ye receive not of her plagues". May God have mercy on their souls.

No young in the vid was middle aged or older. In a generation this dispute will be moot if this trend continues.
