Mankind has been around for hundreds of thousand of years. Maybe even millions. When I was a kid I was taught at school that mankind was around 40 thousand years old. Today, som sixty years later, we can be sure it's at least 300 thousand. Acknowledging the Earth is 4.6 billion years old and that the planet could sustain hominid life for the last one billion years, then that could approximately be the time we've been here. Ample time for dozens, if not hundreds of civilisations to arise to a certain level of technology, to disappear again after meteor or comet impacts, gigantic tidal waves, humungus solar outbursts, diseases, wars, etcetera.
