Here in Asia, a 99% is good enough to get you a seat at the dinner table for the next month.

As an Indian who got 91% in boards. I can tell you my parents are still salty about that and it's been 7 years now. They wanted above 95%.

"if you didn't get a 100, you already failed infront of you're family"
That is indeed the case my friend.

To explain this german system:
1 means perfect - best
2 means great
3 means ok
4 means alright
5 means bad
6 means failed - you are a failure 😮
We say in Germany "Alles was mindestens eine 4 ist, ist bestanden." In English: "Everything with a 4 is passed."
The reason to that system is similar to a ranking system. Top 3 are the best, anything under it either decent or really bad.
I hope I cleared it out.

The idea behind the 6 grades here in Germany is, and that's how it's originally been used as far as I know, that 6 means "ungenügend", which means in no way sufficient. 5 means "mangelhaft" or partly sufficient. 4 is "ausreichend", what means it is sufficient, but just barely tolerable. 3 is "befriedigend", which says mostly satisfying. 2 is "gut" and means there are no shortcomings ("gut" translates to good, just fyi). And 1 stands for "sehr gut" (translates to "very good") and means it is written in such a style that, even for something with no mistakes or shortcomings, it stands out. "Sehr gut" is used synonymously to "hervorragend" or outstanding. But we also have a percentage system behind it, so 50% of all points is the passing mark and gives one a 4/"ausreichend".

The way that the US and England could just go from bickering to siding together in a heartbeat is too real.
