BeNeLux is actually a deep connection between the countries. Kind of a prerequisit to the European Union. All three were founding Members of the EU.

Is it really a Vlogging Through History reaction video without “welcome back!” being the first words?

In all seriousness, love that when you’re about to go on a trip showcasing historical sites you lead up to it with videos giving context to the history of those sites. That makes watching the on-site videos a lot more appealing because it’s likely something you’ve just done a reaction video about.

Keep up the great work, have a safe trip!

An interesting note about Leopold I of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha is that he was the widower of Princess Charlotte, the daughter of George IV of the UK. It was Charlotte's death during childbirth that sparked the panic which resulted in William IV and his brother getting married and having children in order to secure descendants to the throne of the UK. William IV's children didn't live particularly long or were stillborn but in 1819, the future Queen Victoria was born. She married into the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha herself but it is interesting that if Princess Charlotte had not died in childbirth, the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha would still come to power in the UK and Belgium would have had a completely different king. It's always those dang flaps of that one butterfly's wings, isn't it?

I had the privilege of visiting Bruge and Ypres a couple years ago. It's an amazing country. Especially Ypres for WWI history. We visited the In Flanders Field Museum (best WWI museum I've ever seen) and the Sanctuary Woods museum at Hill 62. Walking the trenches at Sanctuary Woods was a humbling experience. Enjoy your visit!

I absolutely LOVE Belgium! I lived in both Bruxelles and Verviers for a total of 10 months, and found the people to be extremely warm and friendly, and I fell in love with the culture, food, and sights. Belgium should be a MUST for everyone going to Europe for vacation!!!!

I just love your videos. It mixes the video's "what" (and sometimes "why") with your "why". You add a lot of background knowledge and things that might not be apt for the original video creator to put in their video. Also, your videos often illustrate how history has a huge intepretative element to it.

Thank you for the video about Belgium! I hope you'll enjoy our country. Of course Belgium has a lot more history about the language barrier Dutch in the north and French in the south.
I hope you'll try the chocolate, fries and waffles when you're here in Belgium!

As an inhabitant of Ypres, I highly recommend you going to the Ypres museum which is actually next to the In Flanders Fields Museum. It's a museum that informs you about the rich history the city has, starting from the middle ages (or actually the Roman period: there is one wonderful find of a Venus figurine dating back to the Roman period which is to be found in the museum). In this museum you will see how Ypres develops as Belgium changes due to the directorship of new rulers (and Belgium (the geopgraphical area) has had quite a lot of different rulers). We have a lot more to offer than WW1-history alone! But I also recommend going to all the WW1-musea we have ofcourse, such as the Memorial Museum Passchendaele in Zonnebeke, Hooge Crater museum and Hill 62 museum in Zillebeke and ofcourse the IFFM in Ypres itself.

My sister recently visited a friend who lives in Belgium. Hannah didn't think there was much to do, but my sister had lots of things she wanted to see and they ran out of time. My sister took some great pictures.

Are you gonna see the NATO hq in Brussels? Because I think it’s there, I know NATO was born there but I don’t know if you can see it or you can’t.

Hey, as a guy from Ypres i can confirm that the city had alot of its wealth from trading with the british.. currently, a part of the cloth hall is being renovated though, but you can still visit it. Inside there are currently 2 musea that you can visit. One that's more focussed on the city's history (with a main focus on medival history) and another one that's focussed around WW1. (Also, if you ever want to get a great view of the city, for a few extra euros you can climb the tower (sadly idk how much though)).

Anyways, I really hope you'll enjoy your stay here!

10:56 not sure why this is not mentioned but France provided a lot of support for Belgium and I believe even marched some troops directly into the Netherlands, the English also got involved I believe.

14:05 maybe it was this one but I could have sworn that the French were in support of the Belgium revolution from the start.

14:53 Fun fact: there is no King of Belgium, only a King of the Belgians, he symbolically takes his power not from ruling the country but from the people who let him rule.

13:42 Belgian independence was supposed to be guaranteed. When the Dutch invaded Belgium in 1831, the French sent 70, 000 men in Belgium which prompted a Dutch withdrawal, and even went on to capture the citadel of Antwerp in 1832.

Just a small correction: the Belgian state did not support Leopold II's colonial ideas at all. Belgium had a fairly disastrous attempt in Guatemala in the 1840s and even tried to get Hawaii under Leopold I. Because of these failures, and their growing trade reputation, they refused to participate in the scramble for Africa which is why Leopold II had to found the "International African Association" to get it as a personal property.
