The only book I've ever read by Whitehead is Sag Harbor, and honestly after reading it I contemplated never picking up a book of his ever again. But, since this one's gotten so much attention and you like it as well, I think I'll give it a try

Interesting to hear your review on that one. I was very surprised seeing it wan NBA, mainly because based on the plot and reaction on youtube, I thought it to be a bit like Olivia Butler (that is great in her own rights but not very literary). Definitely interested in reading it.

What would you recommend for someone trying to read more complex books? Stuff that's a little pulp/violence driven. Like Cormac McCarthy but a little less soul crushing?

Was thinking, after you said, "Has America changed"?, that another similar book, "The good lord bird" by James McBride, won the NBA in 2013. I have the feeling not a lot of people are reading that terrific novel now? The author himself was surprised that he had gotten the award (he didn't even prepare a speech upon receiving the prize). I would still choose Toni Morrison's novels or Claudia Rankine's "Citizen". For all the topical/historical/political strenght of Whitehead's novel, I wasn't very captivated by the narrative voice...

Hi Mattia, another great review man:) Was just going thru ur patreon page today, where u state how difficult it is to find used contemporary books at ur place....and that made me cringe bcoz in our country(India), even new releases arrive much later than the west on Amazon, just forget used titles, n that too with exorbitant price tags....so unlucky we are..anyways keep up the great work...

Another great down to earth review..wonderful how he simplifies complex intellectual pursuits like challenging literary fiction....real good track record...nice Utube channel....so much crap out there.

This book kind of fell off my radar after I read a couple of fairly negative reviews. Interestingly they said that the book shied away from violence, whereas here you are comparing it to Blood Meridian! Who to trust... who to trust... I guess I'll have to find out myself.

Does anyone ever get tired of the books about slavery that have cartoonishly evil white bad guys?
