Colson Whitehead's enormously popular 2016 "speculative fiction" novel about an escaped slave navigating American society wasn't as good as I hoped, but there's still plenty to appreciate in it.

I read The Nickel Boys and it was just ok to me. And I’m currently struggling to finish Harlem Shuffle. But I still want to read The Underground Railroad 😆 It sounds interesting enough that I still want to pick it up. Thanks for another great and thorough review!

Both a novel and author I hadn't heard of, let alone read, and yet I found it supremely interesting! You have a way of summarising that is both informative and easy to follow. Great writer. Great story-telling. The major bad character, Ridgeway, was super interesting.

However, this whole “cartoonishly evil white slave-master” cliche has been done to death.
