Pilot Physicians

Depending on the individuals career path, most start out as military pilots and then move on to medical school. Once selected into the Pilot-Physician program they combine their experience as pilots with their expertise as medical doctors to scrutinize the physiological interaction of humans and the aircraft they fly. In a case like that of the F-22, the technologically bilingual skill set of the pilot-physician played an essential role in investigating aerial incidents and mishaps.

When I was a kid I wanted to be a pilot. Now, I am a pre med student. This might be a way to do both!

We have one of these guys in my unit. It's great to have him. With an extreme ops tempo he helps to keep us healthy and gives us medical advice we can trust because he's part of the crew. I think it's a great program.

I am wanting to go to medical school to become a doctor and this is definitely one of the things that I would love to do, I am between this, radiology, and maybe forensic pathology.

I always thought that this kind of profession was very out of the know than most obscure professions. The Idea is very simple, yet very few really ever talk about it.

God Damn it AMN. "My favorite expression I would hear when I messed up" during my tour". OK great idea. I think there are other specialty positions that should be considered as well such as Barbur surgeon, I can't say that I see this to be cost and time effective. Do Cardiologist need to have an M.I. to care for people have cardiac events. Perhaps he should snap his femur to care for Ortho PT's. There are too many tools available, so the FLT Surgeon understands the stress of flight to have too physically experience I assume that the primary mission would be MD and not Pilot. Who wouldn't want to fly the Raptor? The role of the FLT Surgeon is so involved that it should consume all your time. it wouldn't be in the best interest of the USAF to spread you this thin. FLT Surgeons need to be state of the art to serve, it's not part time. There is also the risk of crashing, and if that happens, we lose two incredibly important positions. The Barbour Surgeon can be done on your time off. I say stick with that. I may be wrong and just envious, but it bothers me to think someone who has the gift of being A Doc take it for granted and feel the need to be more. I submit this with great respect.
