What Is This Chart Supposed To Be? | Explained

This graph was created in order to promote the model minority myth! Learning from Median Household Income!

I guess we're supposed to believe that 'Median Household Income in the United States By Ethnicity' proves America cant be systemically racist against black people; and our own economic standing in America is our own fault... however, even at first glance, a few things about this infographic don't add up...

Even the term "Asian" is loaded. Asia is a huge continent with an extremely diverse range of nations, cultures, religions and languages. I'm of Indian decent. Does that mean I am in the same demo as someone from Vietnam?
Ridiculous really.

Those H-1B visas are also a trap. While their recipients do make good money, the visa allows the company to pay them less than what they would have to pay a US citizen or permanent resident. It also ties their ability to stay in the country to that job meaning they’re forced to put up with whatever horrible labor policies the company decides to adopt (I’d bet you any amount of money there are a ton of H-1B employees that wish they could quit Twitter right now).

Indians are the CEOs of top companies whether it is Google, Microsoft, Starbucks, Adobe and thousands of other top companies. Founders of 1/3rd of Silicon Valley startups. Top in education and income and lowest crime and divorce rate. Indeed a model minority and they deserve all this because of their decent culture and hard work. Indian community is tight knit with good conservative values and morals. "Unity in Diversity" is a moto in India. Indian families stick together, they raise good cultured kids who then grow up to become valuable members of the society.

Hey! Im an Indian immigrant, and i love your analysis. The first time i saw that chart online i rolled my eyes. What my indian brother mentions in the immigration section is true, and also, you'd need another series worth of videos to unpack Caste in India, and how it squeezes capable people out of opportunities by generations of systemic colourism and discrimination. Naturally, my brothers whose families get the funds and opportunities to get their child into top positions in america have also benefitted from privileges granted by systemic discrimination as well.
And most of them love to say, "well you just need to work hard, like I did" 😂

I appreciate how concisely you broke this one down, so I bookmarked it for any of those special conversations that make me stop talking to a person…
I am trying to be more hopeful about what direction we are going in as a country, but I can’t listen to Thomas Sowell without also feeling like throwing up. I think Clarence Thomas is another good example of that phenomenon, but he is somewhat more of an immediate danger to the whole country at the moment so is in his own category in a way.

Sounds to me like there is a correlation between getting a degree and salary.

on the point about Indian and Asian immigrants -- the idea that those in China are less likely to have bachelors is (I'm assuming) true. But China is a pretty screwed up place -- I imagine they don't have bachelors not because they can't hack a college curriculum, but because their is a scarcity of money and spots in colleges.

The problem of Median Income is like comparing Morgan Freeman and you, Morgan Freeman earns a few more dollars than you do.

ofcourse Indians have high incomes because only highly skilled people are let in by immigration policy.
Almost every Indian who immigrated is an engineer or doctor. it's a tiny filtered sample size.

You're always putting off what we could do today. Soap opera says, you've got one life to live... Who's right, who's wrong?

Indian Americans now have the highest median household income out of any ethnic group"
Then why is there still a rebuttable presumption that they are socially disadvantaged?
13 Code of Federal Regulations 124.103 "Who is socially disadvantaged"part (b) includes this group" Subcontinent Asian Americans (persons with origins from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, the Maldives Islands or Nepal);"
