I am from that area. There is a rock quarry not too far from there. Apparently the mine was under the soccer field causing the collapse.

Remember a news story way back involving a sink hole. A guy was asleep in his room when his bedroom floor collapsed and he was never seen again. Authorities figure the sink hole was 500 feet deep.

This is one of my top irrational fears. Terrifying.

The problem is that most public schools, playgrounds, and fields are placed on the least valuable municipal land (e.g., former landfills, wetlands, etc.). I also wonder if they did any test pits/geological testing before they put the footings in for that light pole (such testing is a pretty standard practice) because they may have been able to determine there was an issue before the sinkhole opened up.

And I always thought quicksand was going to be more of a problem.

Luckily no one was there at the time. It happened so fast no one could have done a thing. Doesn't anyone check to see what is under before construction? How many other places are at risk for the same reasons?

I read the title too quick. Thought sinkhole was something else. It is Illinois after all.
