Matt is one of the few, REAL "experts" on YouTube I'll listen to. Despite his numerous world records, he's a humble man who truly enjoys teaching and seeing people succeed. Listen to every word, because little tips like this not only allow you to lift heavier, they'll prevent injuries/extend your career too. Thanks to Matt for all of this free information. If only everyone was so generous, the world of strength training would be a better place...

How does this guy not have more subs? Literally specializes in this field with his advanced degree and also applied it in his endeavors for powerlifting.

You can’t use the D handle on the new military pt tests. You have to flip it around. Just FYI.

He knows what he's doing. Lifting is hard, and many people stop because of poor technique. Great seeing someone who is a master of the technique

I had a non lifting elbow injury 9 years ago and can no longer turn my hand from neutral and can’t do any straight bar lifting. My primary movement is Trap Bar Deadlifts. I’ve definitely noticed the bar gets out of the groove easier because you can’t ride it up the shins. “Feeling the heal” I’ve found is the #1 technique, it’s easy to get pitched forward or even to one side. I train with the low handles for a longer range of motion and I have found that one should err to the side of gripping the handles slightly forward off center, that way if the bar tilts, it will tilt backwards instead of forwards. Once the optimal grip placement is found, mark it with a Sharpie

Used to get inner knee discomfort when I first started using the Trap bar. Once I used time to fill around with positioning I found for me that if I started off the floor almost 'bowlegged' focusing on firing the quads the knee discomfort went away. Great video Matt really enjoyed it.

Excellent, I primarily use the trap bar for legs because my bad knees prevent me from doing full squats. Some other strength experts (who I will not name ) disparage the use of the TB, I guess they assume everyone is healthy and can do heavy squats.

Thx for this, I'm not interested in increasing my weight on the trap bar but I am interested in improving my technique. This is a great help.

Great tips and advice! The one downside of the trap bar is that, unlike a regular barbell, your hands are forced to be a fixed distance apart. For smaller people with more narrow shoulders, this puts their arms/hands in a very awkward position. Instead of the arms hanging straight down from the shoulders, they end up angling outwards. With a barbell, you are able to grab wherever you want.

Great video! I just bought a 70's open trap bar on eBay. I love it. The people that say this bar is useless, are nuts. They probably never used one, or don't know how . I'm 65, and I also have a 5 ft Quest Olympic straight bar. But my old school open trap bar is way better for shrugs too. Vrs. the straight bar, because of hand position. Feels better, and I can lift more weight... Your video is helpful. Plus, No dumb music in the

The trap bars we use for the ACFT doesn’t have the handles, the height is the same as a straight bar

I have used a Gerhard Trap Bar since they came out. Only one set of handles on mine. I do indeed feel more ab effort, and I use more legs than in regular DL’s.

I really appreciate your Giving It Back! education to your viewers. Each of us stands on the shoulders of those who’ve come before us!
