When I took Japanese in university, I was told watashi ("I") was used very rarely. Yet the first phrase we learn is this introduction.

I wasn't told onegai shimasu meant 'be kind to me' more so 'thank you'. So knowing this now, I interpret the phrase an apology almost for the speaker using watashi and talking about themselves. As a polite ending.

Its a fascinating language full of culture.

Or: Good job for your first try. I started with their channel at first, too, until I took up real lessons.

I'm Japanese and I wanted to inform you about す (su) and し (shi) is pronounced like how you said in the video. The "u" in すis dropped, but you'd pronounce it if you were reading that letter individually. Similarly, the "i" in しis pronounced very subtly, but you'd very much hear it as "sh" in a sentence. In my image, you'd pronounce that "i" subtly like how native Germans quickly pronounce the "-ten" at the end of many words.
