About piazza Venezia ::
Piazza Venezia is considered the center of the city of Rome due to its geographical position, where the main arteries of the city converge and is dominated by the majestic mass of Palazzo Venezia and the mass of the Vittoriano.
Palazzo Venezia was built in the years from 1455 to 1464 on commission of Cardinal Pietro Barbo who later became Pope Paul II, it forms the western side of the square and was the first Renaissance palace built in Rome.
The name of the builder is not known, but the name of Leon Battista Alberti is assumed.
The palace has the characteristics of a fortress on the upper floor, while the elegant and refined Guelph cross windows show the Renaissance elements, the crenellated contours and the corner tower stand out on the facade. The two portals that look directly on the square one shows the seal of the Barbo and the other is on via Plebiscito, both are attributed to Giovanni Dalmata.
Numerous popes lived there and in 1494 Charles VIII, King of France stayed. From the 16th century the ambassadors of Venice stayed there and in 1797 it was the seat of the Austro-Hungarian embassy to the Vatican. The Sala Regia has paintings by Donato Bramante and the Sala del Mappamondo is decorated from the classic perspectives of Andrea Mantegna.
After the Treaty of Campoformio it passed to Austria for its embassy, in 1916 the building was claimed by Italy and definitively passed to the Italian government, today it is the seat of the Palazzo Venezia Museum.
