When Monofilament Line Outperforms Braid for Topwater Baits

preview_player
Показать описание
Fishing line is a critical component to successful topwater fishing. Choose one that sinks (fluorocarbon), and you'll negatively impact the bait's performance. Monofilament and braided line are your 2 options - both float, and when tied correctly provide freedom of movement to the bait.

Bass pro Drew Benton relies on both for topwater fishing, opting for braid for some baits, but switching to a strong yet supple monofilament line for others. He outlines both in this short, straightforward video.

I use braid with a 2ft mono leader.. Works so much better than just straight mono or straight braid IMO.

I use braid on whopper plopper, spooks, crankbaits and jerkbaits with no problem. I use mono on poppers and rapala minnows

There is a reason it's still going strong.

Braid with a floro leader sinks and sucks too, but I'm not going to go backwards... You'll lose just as many or more bass wrapped around weeds, or be using Mono as thick as a shoelace. Straight braid still.

After 40 years of spin fishing, I'm now getting into baitcasting.
I have a question; I saw that you (and other fishermen) use a braided line backing but some people claim that when the braided line gets wet it swells and comes away from the spool causing it to slip. Have you ever experienced that?
Thanks for the great vidoes!!

i still use mono leader for all my braid to leader material. for me it allows me to get that extra period of time for my hook sets and to give me that extra stretch for me. i know there are times when doing braid direct or braid to fluoro would be better but for me and my confidence i just feel more comfortable. only time ill go braid direct to lure is frog lures. and for things like flipping ill use 17 lb mono as a braid to mono leader for that because in my areas i fish 20lb fluoro or mono leader to lure isnt necessarily needed. could it work better a sure. but if you have confidence in something and performs best for you and your fishing style and you do best that way do not change it.

I pretty much use braid for everything... mono leader for topwater, flouro leader for sinking. IMO, don't really need the "stretch" of mono if you stick to the rule of moderate action rod for anything with a treble hook.

I have a question that’s a little off topic. Someone asked me why use line that’s a higher pound strength than your reel? I had no answer to give so I’m asking here. For example, my Citica is rated at 12 lbs ( I believe this is fairly common), so why use anything more than 12 lb test? Thanks in advance for any help.

Braid or Mono? Why not both! Braid to a Mono leader!

I always use mono for anything with treble hooks, sometime I'll do braid with a mono leader. You will lose alot of fish using straight braid with treble hooks.
