Trump is doing what Brazil tried to do in the 1980s by putting tariffs on imported cars and electronics. The idea was to protect domestic companies in the sector. What happened is those companies had no incentive to innovate and improve their products, so Brazilians got stuck with shitty uncompetitive domestic products. As soon as tariffs were lifted, domestic companies were wiped out by foreign competition with their vastly superior products.
