The death of princess Charlotte - the woman who should have been queen.

The 1800s housed the reign of Queen Victoria. She spanned across 63 years and 7 months and in her time she saw changes in areas such as industry, science and military. She also saw changes in politics and the British empire expanded. She was even granted the title the empress of India in 1876. But Queen Victoria was the niece of king George IV. And it was only due to the premature death of his daughter, Princess Charlotte, that Victoria found her way to becoming queen.

The “what ifs” of history are always far reaching and interesting to speculate on. Another great presentation!😊

Throughout Royal History there is A lot of "who SHOULD have been."

I read once that she was referred to as English Rose, and whole country was very devastated when she died. In about similiar way how Princess Diana's death affected too.

Her reign could have been a spectacle if not for her life being cut so short.

Thanks for reminding people about Charlotte. She has become just a faded link between others. You could do a dozen programs or more about her mother Queen Caroline and her tragic treatment. Also of interest is that Prince Leopold was the uncle of Queen Victoria (her mother's brother). He was a trusted advisor to her for many years. In 1832 he was so trusted by the British government that he was their candidate to become King of Belgium, a kingdom newly created at that time. The current Belgian royal family is descended from Leopold.

I never knew the story about princess Charlotte and how Queen Victoria ended up becoming Queen of England. Obviously it wasn’t covered in American schools. Very sad

So, so many mothers and babies died in the older royal families. The joy of impending motherhood must have always been tempered with fear for all involved. I always feel heartbroken for these families when l listen to these stories.... yes even Henry the VIII gets my deepest sympathies. It must have been despairing to all to watch the cycle happen time and time again. 💔

Thank you for sharing this. I haven’t explored beyond the Tuders and before Queen Victoria. It seems such a tangle. And no (one) English personality(ies) seemed half as interesting as the French - in the post-Tudor era.

This was so tragic for the British Empire at the time.

Dying in childbirth or shortly thereafter was so common until very recently. People forget; as a woman I can’t forget as I see our rights scarily eroded in the United States. Incredibly scary times

Childbirth was always risky Business during those times.

Poor Charlotte. We could have another Queen Charlotte, if Prince William’s second offspring, princess Charlotte succeed.

She wore beautiful dresses. Her hairdos.... not so much.

Queen Victoria was only born because Princess Charlotte died. After her death all of Charlottes uncles raced each other to try to be the first to have a legitimate child so that child could become 1st in line to the throne. Obviously Prince Edward won that race by fathering Victoria but unfortunately died before she was 1

I think the title should be “Princess Charlotte WOULD have been Queen had she not died”
Your title infers that someone shoved her out the way and took the throne themselves.
Charlotte is not remembered enough in UK history. The monarchy had twists and turns all over the place. The Tudor reign is very questionable. This twist and turn is just very sad.
