Testing Xeon E5 2650v2 with Chinese X79 LGA2011 Motherboard

This is my first channel video! Be kind in the comments. After watching some videos from Jeff @CraftComputing and @TechnoTim, I ordered up some cheap Chinese X79 motherboards off eBay. These motherboards are "re-manufactured", meaning the chipsets are reclaimed from retired server hardware and built into new motherboards to help sell their massive inventory of used server hardware to homelabbers and consumers. I also picked up a pair of used Intel Xeon E5-2650v2 (8c 16t) processors and 4x 16GB of used DDR3 1866Mhz PC3-14900R ECC memory. In this video I do some basic benchtop testing to make sure nothing I paid for was DOA and explore the BIOS on this Machinist X79G LGA2011 Motherboard.

👍 Thanks for watching! If you enjoyed this video please give it a like, leave a comment & consider subscribing.

I built 3 of these. All successful. 2630v2, 2650v2, and a 2696v2. M.2 NVME SSD, 16 or 32 gb ram. 2 gb video cards. Got everything super cheap. They all run good.

I would check MIYCONST channel for detailed reviews of these Chinese motherboards and best pairings vis a vis the XEON CPU's (both X79 and X99 variants).

Also, I tend to shy away from Machinist and have opted for HuananZhi ("HZ"), given their reputation wrt VRM's (quality caps/chokes, etc.) and reliance on C600 series chipsets. With XEON, unless on an extreme budget, always opt for QUAD channel DIMM's, if at all possible.

I have had a positive experience with the HZ on two builds:
HZ deluxe X79 + E54627V2 (8C/8T all core 3.5Ghz) + 6 pipe x 6mm dual/RGB 120mm SNOWMAN
HZ X99TF + E5-2678V3 (12C/24T all core 3.3Ghz with Miyconst Turbo-unlock) + SNOWMAN CPU cooler.

Awesome video. I watched a few of your first videos and were surprised that their quality were quite high! Subbed!

Nice video. I run a Dell T5610 workstation with dual 2650 V2s and 128 GBs of RAM. Got it second hand from an animation studio locally. Popped in a GTX 1070 and use it as my everything machine from video editing, messing around with VMs, coding, and gaming. The tower is a monster but I love this computer.

Bought the same motherboard and cpu combo for homelab too. While waiting them to arrive nice to meet with your videos. Waiting for installation tutorials and benchmarking videos.

Does the m.2 slot support both sata and nvme ssd? Or is it just limited to nvme only?

Hey Ben. I stumbled across your channel looking at Xeon processors and found your video. Great video by the way. I would love to know what was the price point for the motherboards or where did you get them. Thinking of upgrading my Xeon E3 home server and your kit fits my needs. Curious on the price saving 🤔

Could you let me know if it works in quad mode and if it needs some bios tweaking to do so? I have a trouble with similar if not same board only showing 2 channels in dimms. But posting 16Gb of ram. Checked all rams, and resocketed CPU. No changes.

Mine is working with non-ecc... It kept freezing while using ecc with all the slots populated, specifically the two by the I/O. Tried non ecc and no problems at all...

Could a e5-2695 v2(115W) or e5-2697(130W) work with this pico power supply? Since the video is 3 year old has anyone else watching this video lately bought it and is it the same?
