School reform has to be done in America, and many more other countries too.

I hated history in school, but as soon as I was out of it, I discovered that I loved history. It's all just a matter of how it's taught.

In my eyes, schools are no longer about learning but about grades, at least down here in Greece. No free time, too small breaks, and, in my opinion, an awful examination system to get in universities. Kids have no time or them selves and their interests, for they do extra classes in the evening, not to mention the amounts of homework. All in all, well said misha, and i think the problem isnt only in America, but its a general problem. Keep up the good work!

I cringe so much when people don't know the basic informations they should know. But I also think it is mostly not their fault since education system is not helping them.

The main problem with schools is that they focus too much on grades rather than education. The purpose of a school is to teach rememberable, important information -- not to create a pointless, flawed, human scoreboard that discourages failing students from knowing their true learning potential. Teachers are so busy testing their students that they're not spending any of that time teaching them.

I was an “overachiever “ and now in my later 20s I am able to admit : I cheated and memorized the whole way through. I did learn some things and had many exams I didn’t cheat on, but for the most part my attitude was to do whatever it took to get good grades and get into a good college. This was the attitude of many of my peers as well. We didn’t care much about the actual information. Now the end result, I am only just now actually learning about history, finance, and other subjects I find myself interested in. I think more “smart “ people need to be able to admit this. That we were mostly faking and just getting good scores on tests. I didn’t actually understand or remember most things I was taught. My husband is very passionate about history (he was a horrible student ironically ) and only through him have I actually been able to understand more about certain time periods and what they meant for humanity. In school I just memorized names and dates

"Education is what you are left with when you forget everything you have LEARNED". I personally find that quote didn't age well in our EDUCATION system.

I work as a chef. I had a young culinary school graduate that worked for me for a few years. One day i pointed to a clock and told her to pull a pan out of the oven at 4:17.

She didn't know how to read the clock. I thought this was impossible but she explained that in school they used digital clocks and she always uses her timer on her phone and just needed the total minutes to punch into her timer.

I spent 2 weeks explaining how the clock hands work and quizzing her. She was so excited to learn and spent her first paycheck buying a watch.

As a teenager living in Italy, I can assure you guys that it is so much worse in my country. I don't even know where to begin.
1. We have school on Saturdays.
2. We sit in the classroom for 5-6 hours, from 8 a.m. to 1 or 2 p.m. with no lunch break. Most of us live far from our schools, so we have lunch at 2 or 3 p.m.
3. We do not change classrooms. We have all of our lessons in one room.
4. We have 2 breaks that each last 10 minutes, which don't give us enough time to do anything.
5. The teachers DO NOT stop talking after the bell rings. We often miss our breaks because of this.
6. Our books are REALLY heavy. When I was in third grade my bag weighed 15kg (33 pounds).
7. Our grading system consists of numbers from 2 to 10. Anything below 6 means you've failed. You would expect someone to get a 10 if their work is flawless, but that's not how it works here. It's really hard to get anything above 8.
Most of the time, over 1/2 of the class fails their test.
8. It is REALLY easy to fail the year. It is normal for a class to start out with 30 students and finish with 14. Many people drop out of school and don't graduate.
9. We study way too many subjects. I have 14 subjects in my school, which include latin, art history, italian literature, english literature and philosophy.
10. We have A LOT of homework. It seems teachers have forgotten that we have many subjects. One can spend from 3 to 9 hours a day on schoolwork.
11. We have A LOT of tests and interrogations, which are oral tests. About 4 a week. On some weeks even 8.
12. We have summer homework, Christmas homework and Easter homework. Usually, it's a lot of homework. Many of my classmates spend Christmas eve and Christmas day doing homework, and do not manage to finish it by the end of the holidays.
13. The schools are really disorganized. It's embarassing. They send the information for the first day of school (including what time we should go) two or three days before school starts. We spend the first month with a short schedule, because they have to organize everything (who knows why they can't do that in the summer).
14. You really feel the political indoctrination. Many teachers have really strong opinions (not just on Italian politics, but often of the rest of the world).
15. We have 5 years of high school instead of 4
16. We do not get to choose our subjects. We get to choose what field we'd like to study, but each field has subjects that are already set.
17. The teachers are not qualified to teach. All you need is a degree and you can get a job at a highschool. I've had architects teaching grammar and engineers teaching art history.
18. We have to pay A LOT of respect to the teachers, which starting from middle school we call "professors". We stand up when they walk in and chant "good morning".

The school system has barely changed in the past century. Teaching methods are very traditional and based upon the idea that discouraging students leads to motivation.

This is coming from an A+ student, meaning that I am able to get 8s and 9s and on magical occasions even 10s, because I study 8 hours a day and have no social life whatsoever. I barely sleep and suffer from anxiety and mental health issues because of school. I spent a month at school in the US and I'd say that the main issue with it is that too little is taught. The school environment is too relaxed, compared to here. I think we need an in between.

Financial education should be a requirement. Budgeting, Investing. How to buy a home. How much of a lifestyle you can afford. Nah. Teach them about how white people have privilege and nobody can get ahead…

In Belgium we used to have one of the best education systems in the world. In recent years however the quality and standards of education have dropped significantly. It is all about including everyone and helping the "weaker" pupils and students, thereby lowering the bar for everyone and forgetting about the brightest students who also need special attention. Some of the aspect you mentioned are also applicable to the situation in Belgium.

Very interesting channel, great videos. I love your nuanced and down to earth look on things. Keep up the good content! Speak your mind because your opinion truly matters and a lot of people agree even though it might not look like it in the "public opinion" and media (because it is mostly controlled by the loudest minority on both sides of the political spectrum).

Greetings from a Flemish historian! All the best to you, Misha!

I went to a Catholic online school, Kolbe Academy, throughout my four years of high school and loved my experience. We memorized poems (at one point I had The Raven, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, Shakespeare's Sonnet 18, and Harlem memorized - sadly I have not revisited them enough to recite their entirety from memory), read from Aristotle, Dostoyevsky, G.K. Chesterton and many others... it was incredible. I took it for granted for much of my high school education, but that school truly taught me how to learn from the world around me and made me fall in love with history and literature.

All that to say, I totally agree with you that there are deep errors in the education system, but I have hope that it can be done right. I got a wonderful and flexible education and I hope to share that with my own kids :) Thank you so much for your video!

I think one other major reason more and more students are getting "useless degrees" in all of these woke topics is simply it's easier. It's an easy degree to get. It's all theory and discussion, and if you agree with the professors and their ideology, you pass with flying colors. It's more about a comfort zone and not having the ambition to do something hard or new. Everything has to be a safe space for people like that.

In undergrad I was a B student. The A students never retained the info after the class. Found out when talking to a classmate studying for the GRE. Magna Cum Laude honor student from a STEM program couldn't figure out basic high school level algebra problems. I had to teach her. She's in a PhD program I didnt qualify for. The educational system is a Joke.

I took a state's quiz in 12th grade. Everyone in the class was FREAKING OUT about this quiz. I was the only one to get a 50/50. I can really relate to the clips that you showed in the beginning.

My mother was a primary school teacher for over 30 years. Her profession was criminally underpaid.
We need to incentive people to be teachers by raising their salaries.

I am currently 19 years old, and since I graduated high school, it seems like schools have gotten significantly worse than when I was there. I also am a current college student at a “conservative” school, yet whenever I share my opinion on something, I seem to get cancelled by the left. Schools and the education system are awful, and I fear they’ll only get worse

These videos bring me an immense amount of cringe to watch and hear. The fact that it’s considered cool to not know anything, makes my brain hurt. Someone help these kids, we need a whole overhaul of our system

As a Indian I'm proud of my education system, because in government schools all the necessary things like bag, notes, writing materials are free and they will provide free healthy lunch. Also a true useful education that were given to us. But the only backdrop is the people is not interested in learning. Soon this will change. Thank you Misha petrov.
