I think fans need to give Dubas and his assistants a little credit. Look at the work they did this summer. Marleau’s big cap hit? Gone. Babcock’s d-man security blankets? Gone. Johnnson and Kapanen? Signed on team-friendly deals. Their young superstar core? Signed for another five years. They picked up a good young third line center and got a right handed puck moving dman thrown in for a guy who can’t help from getting himself suspended in the playoffs. Gardner is gone! This team is the best its looked since I have been following them (76/77 season). Let’s enjoy it!

I think people forget that they have an assistant GM that literally had a hand in the CBA and salary cap system. Pridham is definitely a valuable piece to have as part of the management team.

Andrew, if Ryan Kesler remains on LTIR for the rest of his contract which looks like a possibility given Kesler's health issues and Horton and Clarkson's contracts are about to expire at the end of this season, would it make sense for the leafs to acquire Kesler from Anahiem to get extra cap space until Kesler's contract expires?

not to mention the cap will go up by 25% due to leafs merchandise sales going through the roof when we win the cup this year

As a Swede following Toronto I'm excited for the season, and especially for a Nylander rebound! Hoping for a healthy Matthews and that him and Nylander can create som magic together again. I've certainly missed that since we didn't get to see it last season.

You didn't mention that there spending 50% of there cap on unproven players that haven't won anything yet but a playoff birth so far. And now they are going to have to pay the other 50% of the cap on 19 other players

I completely agree and I have been saying the same. The Leafs have no bad contracts outside of maybe Cody Ceci and that contract is over at the end of the year. No one is gonna sit here and pretend like our situation isn't complicated, but the Leafs have a ton of options because they have good players on reasonable contracts.

@Andrew, you are totally right, we can and we will. 110-115 points? The first of three Cups? Marner 100 + and Willie 90+ points. GLG!

Excuse my ignorance but how are they going to maintain an experienced blue line with a projected cap increase of a couple million when only one defenceman is signed beyond this year?

What worries me the most about the Leafs is how thin they are on the blue line . I know everyone is optimistic about Liligren and Sandin but the reality is neither of them have played a minute of NHL hockey . If one of either Rielly, Muzzin or Barrie gets hurt its asking a lot for either Liligren or Sandin to step in and cover a regular shift on a daily bases. If they lose multiple blue liners like say both Rielly and Barrie than they'll be in REAL TROUBLE. Depth is typically what teams who are against the cap lose over time and I think the Leafs are one injury away from this season being a total disaster but i will try to remain optimistic that such a thing won't happen.

I dont know much about the cap and how contracts work i just want to know how the Leafs are going to get under the cap when they're 13 mil over (LTIR?) and when is the date where teams have to under before they get penalized?

I say next year cap issues are next year worries.
We got a team this season and that's the only thing I care about. GoLeafsGo.

Also, Mitch Marner’s contract was pretty much all signing bonus and the only money that went towards the cup was the $750, 000-$700, 000 per year. So in six years they used up $4.5 million for Mitch MARNER lmao.... that’s nothing boys

You are correct on this one. We are overpaying our big three youngsters. In a perfect world we would have signed Nylander to 6 or 6.5, Matthews to 10.5 or 11, Marner to 8.5 or 9. But we don't live in a perfect world. At least we don't have Backes or Lucic taking up space. Surely it is better to pay good players than to throw money at guys who are no longer relevant. It isn't as good as it could be but it is better than it is is for a lot of teams.

Would have been nice if you actually explained the numbers for people, but seeing as how you didn't . . .
Cap limit is $81.5 million.
According to Capfriendly, the Leafs current salary sits at $84, 315, 199 This includes Phil Kessel's $$, plus Dermott's and Hyman's, but not Clarkson's and Horton's as they will be put on LTIR.
The Leafs are currently $2, 815, 199 over the cap. If you get rid of two expendable defenseman and 1 expendable forward (down to the minors), you can make up $2, 200, 000, which still leaves the Leafs $615, 199 over the cap. Get rid of one more defenseman & they are now inside the cap, but . . . they are playing with only 6 D & 12 F on their roster, so they'll have to hope for ZERO injuries. Tell me again how the Leafs cap situation is not a problem?
Oh, and just so you know, I'm not worried about it as I'm confident Dubas, with the help of his assistant (the contract guru) will figure something out.

It never was a problem. The Leafs are using their space intelligently.

I only wish they had gotten a longer commitment out of Matthews and Marner. 8 years a piece and it would be golden. Now by the time those contracts get good they'll be over, rather than having 2-3 bargain years at the end.

In 2 years, Seattle enters, u.s t.v deals and gambling % retained will raise the cap by alot. Vegas came in and it went up 4 million. That's without the t.v deals and gambling intake.
