Loud trucks? The mall? C'mon. The real reason not to move to Missoula is the 1, 000 ft 1 bed, 1 bath ramshackle houses that sell for $475, 000. Wish I was exaggerating.

Hamilton is not a "suburb" of Missoula: it's a separate town altogether. Other than that, it's all true. Please for the love of god don't move here.

I’m a 31 yo man from Los Angeles, California and plan on moving to Missoula in a few months for a change of scenery. This did not discourage me at all. I’m still excited haha.

Not having a lot there is a plus for me! Thanks from a small town in Missippi! I’ll be hunting, fishing, and praying every weekend.

I visited Missoula back in December 2022. Working. There a month. Snow on the ground every day. I'm from north Texas, so that's a bit much for me. Gets dark too early that far up north. Outside of my work crew I saw maybe 3 black families. I'm black. I went shopping for groceries and video cards, I went to restaurants etc. Never once did I feel uncomfortable. Not one time. Can't say that for stopping in Idaho. I would visit again and take that drive on 90 from Missoula to Seattle. When they say God's country, you can see why. People just need to venture out and see what's comfortable for them.

I am trying to find a good place to escape an abusive situation. I’m trying to find a nice little town to move to and I know I won’t know anyone. I’m looking for a place that has good outdoors and community. Can anyone tell me a good place to move because everyone says not to move anywhere. but I certainly cannot be where I’m at anymore and I’m trying to plan in. This was my plan to come there

Lived in Missoula for almost 20 years until the economy drove us to the wonderful dung heap of Seattle. Other than the economy issue we found it to be a wonderful place to live and we miss it terribly.

Thank you for the info. I live south of Billings slightly in Wyoming. My neighbor had a bumper sticker said 'Keep Missoula weird.'
I always wonder about the charm of that idea. Lived in the Bitterroot during the 70s. Loved the mountains, hike a lot. Your info is still appreciated to be prepared.

I wonder what the Blackfeet, Cheyenne, Kootenai etc felt when transplants came with their cultures and beliefs.

I have lived in her for over 30 years and this is a very accurate review. I would add the lack of sunshine. Being a local I didn't realize this is a problem for most people. But a recent transplant keeps me informed about how many days it has been since Missoula had a sunny day. In the winter, you will be lucky to have one sunny day a week. Also consider the poor job market, high cost of living, high housing costs, high income taxes, high property taxes, lack of private school options, and very liberal public schools.

The main problem here is that this lady is expecting unrealistic expectations from Missoula and Montana. She wants and expects things that a big city has. She should go to a big city. Missoula and Montana will be a lot better off without her complaining attitude.

Very good comments. I lived in Missoula for a number of years from the 70s to the 90s. When I first moved there, teepee burners would make the air quality very bad every winter, especially in December since for some reason the air is stagnant at that time. In late January it would get stormier and blow the smoke out. We didn't have so much of a problem with fire as they seem to have now, although the fire up Pattee Canyon (1800 acres) happened while I was there. The medical situation seems to have changed too. When I was there, Missoula was such a center for medical professionals that the service was far more and better than you would expect for a city that size. It's a much bigger place now, though and looks like the medical establishment isn't keeping up. I was in Missoula this past summer visiting friends and I couldn't believe it. Reserve St. is now wall-to-wall commercial. I wonder what the population is now? Missoula was a very fun place to be in the 70s, when I went to college there. I suppose it's much more businesslike and impersonal now. But still a nice place.

Trucks, trucks, trucks, lived in Darby, Logger's Day. Only semis forever in the parade, had drunks in cars driving on the lawn all around our house, exciting. Even the cops were drunk. Hiked to the end of most those long beautiful canyons. hiked the top of Trapper Peaker, the tallest Como peak, St. Joseph's Peak, worked for the Bitterroot National Forest. Loved it. Got burned out Christmas Day on Lost Horse. Winters are better than Eastern Idaho. Depends on what you like to live there. I loved it. Played hoop in the winter. I'm a bar pianist, love that.

So, you spend long winter in the house, and then summer comes, and it's a smoke season, and you have to be in the house again? Wow...

ALL Mountain communirltues have the same issues. Nothing could be worse than how Colorado has gone to shit.

I wouldn't say locals are rude to out-of-staters. I feel a person projects the direction of their interactions. Missoula is a college town, and tourism is a large part of the state's economy.

What about the jobs available? Apartment rental prices? Im from rural Illinois and was just looking into moving.

The fire smoke from Canada, WA ID, , OR, NorCal and MT itself funnels into the Missoula and Bitteroot Valleys for monthes on end in the heat of summer .Extremely bad air quality when the fires explode and burn for monthes.

So, im done spending $1500/mo on a 1 bedroom home in CA, and done with the 105° weather. Ive lived in CA for 9 years, but moved from WA where I lived for 9 years. I also spent about 6 years in Oregon and 2 years in Nevada I think. So, will I be accepted?
