Amit Shah's prophecy, made a week before the counting, came true, marking an end to Patnaik's tenure. The victory signifies the rise of saffron in Odisha, a coastal state that had never seen a BJP government before. During the campaign's last leg, BJP targeted Biju Janata Dal for its choice of leadership, particularly Tamil bureaucrat turned politician VK Pandian, a close aide of Patnaik. Modi and Amit Shah attacked Pandian, associating him with issues like missing keys, and Himanta Biswa Sarma referred to him as 'Tamil Babu.' Despite Patnaik's clarification that Pandian was not his chosen political heir, the BJD lost ground, and the BJP's lotus bloomed, riding the wave of Odia pride, despite lacking a credible CM face to challenge Patnaik's popularity over the decades.
