I find it kinda funny that this is almost getting into the weeds of topology. For example, a mug with a handle is topologically equivalent to a donut cause they both have holes.

Imagine a tub of ice cream, you get a scoop and grab some. You haven’t made a hole in the ice cream, you’ve made a crater or a dent. It’s only until you reach the other side it becomes a hole (I think?)

A straw has zero holes.
It is a solid 3d object.
If it had a hole in it then it would no longer function as a straw and would not hold pressure for suction

Let's say you have a ball and you cut it in 2 sides, does it have 1 or 2 holes? Well of course it has 2. That's how it works for a straw too, it just happens that the holes are symmetrical.
