They spent their entire lives hating and making fun of their dad, only to have him die protecting them.

The "I was so lucky to be your dad" line broke my heart. I mean... you can see the sadness in Hugh's watered eyes.

Man, Hugh is such a great character; built up to look suspicious from the offset, but literally everything he did was to protect either his family or the Dudleys.

Hugh was only trying to protect everyone. It's just so sad that he was misunderstood :(

It's so heartbreaking how Olivia was so cool and such a good mama before she got under the influence of Hill House. Even her ghost is still under its influence.

For some reason I was so disturbed with Olivia when she hugged Hugh, still looking at Steve. Nell clearly accepts Hugh into her arms but Olivia looks so unsatisfied with this sacrifice because she didn’t get all her kids to stay and I’m sure it was intended in case there would be a second season (even tho the director said there wouldn’t be). Anyway it made me feel suspicious cause it’s like she’d still haunt them anyway.

That part where he walks through the crowd of ghosts. He is now their keeper. He is the promise and he is what keeps their presence alive. GENIUS!

The ending is so beautifully bittersweet but also frustrating because Hill House still won in the end. The Crain siblings didn't win at all. They just survived. The house still managed to manipulate someone, Hugh, into giving their life to it. Olivia, even as a ghost, is still under the influence of the House. Even Mrs. Dudley willingly fed herself to the house (and likely Mr. Dudley as well). The house still remains standing and victorious in some way by the time the last episode ends. That means any wandering visitor can fall victim to it. I doubt Steve will destroy the house because his family and others remain there (either by choice or not).

I just hope season 2 focuses on a new cast because the Crains really deserve a break from all the horror, trauma, and tragedy. They deserve to be happy. So, I want a season 2 but at the same time I don't because it's just so masterfully depressing.

The ending was FANTASTIC, no need for another season.

Cried like a baby. Look, if you manage to terrify and pull emotion in a horror genre, you've created a masterpiece. Well done Mike Flanagan!👍🔥🎬

Hugh was the hero of the series. He got the kids out by himself the night everything went wrong, and he carried the secrets and the weight of everything by himself for years, all to protect his children from the pain he experienced every day. Then his final act was to give his life to save his children. A truly fantastic character.

I cried so fucking hard at this finale. Not just because it was sad, but because it reminded me of my dad.

Hugh really chose to have his children hate him over revealing the truth about their mother as well as dying for them. This man deserved the world

I think this is the first show where the viewers are smart enough to know there doesn't need to be a second season. Not saying people aren't smart or that no show should get renewed, but every time I see a show everybody on the internet immediately goes "WE NEED SEASON 2" but I don't think this one needs a continuation and I'm glad people realize that

Ive seen a few comments about how thw house tricked him into staying but like, heres the thing.

I think he knew exactly what he was doing. Hes still protecting his kids. I dont think he was tricked, i think he made a compromise.

I love how whenever the family is having an emotional/family moment, the ghosts are like "guys, let's give them some space."

Omg... poppy's hands at the end... they're in the same position they were when Olivia jumped. If he looked back he wouldve been captured by the house and wouldve never got out. He left the past behind, let go. In turn he saved his life...

Olivia doesn't look too happy and the way she just stares is subtly terrifying

Theres something about the last scene where Steve is walking out that I cant get over... watching it the first time I was shaken. Just how perfectly its executed. It answers so much. The magnitude of the house's reach on the people that lived in it. But also Steve coming to terms with the reality of it all and accepting it all in that one shot. It's almost like everyone is looking up to him.. like hes the one that will protect them all.. while at the same time threatening him.. urging him to turn around. The people of hill house stand together... but the evil within will never cease to exist. It's my favorite scene of the entire show. While episode 6 is my favorite episode.
