And yet when I worked at waitrose they literally would call the police when homeless people would take bread cooked in the day with a 2000% mark up, yes 2000%, from the bins when we threw it out. Its a complete sham, the supermarkets have no interest in supporting any form of poverty. We saw this in the price gouging during the pandemic and beyond.

I volunteer with Olio which is one of the groups that currently distributes Tesco (and many other shops!) food waste.
This reduce to £0 has always seemed more efficient to me than the Olio system which just adds loads of middlemen and extra car journeys. But the Olio system is "fairer" as the middle people try to make sure the food is shared widely not just all taken by one person (though of course your mileage may vary)

However there is always way too much bread
You can't even give bread away a lot of the time theres such an overabundance of it

Ok so now this makes a bit more sense, given what vague information I've already been told from my superiors.
It looks like the Tesco I work in is going to be one of these trial stores

At the tesco i worked at they would give free food to staff (sometimes) and arrange food to give to charity (every day). Even after all that there would be crates and crates of food waste every day. The food donation seemed to be a bit of a hassle as well; makes more sense to just give it out.

Back in 2019 me and my friend used to go to asda together and absolutely raid the yellow sticker isle. Theyd have a load of sandwiches that were down to 10p and other food down to 10p we used to buy like 6 or 7 sandwiches each amd maybe a few other bits if they were cheap. It saved me during that time because i was in 6th form and didnt yet have a job so all of my money went on the buses and lunch

They barely even do proper reductions on yellow stickers now, like 25% off, makes barely any difference. I doubt theyll do 100% off. Theyd be worried poor people would start to rely on it and not buy food a full price ever

I found that just because it has the yellow sticker on it does not mean it's worth it. Before covid you could pick the items up for 10/20p now it's just 20p off. Sometimes I have even seen a deal on the same thing go for cheaper than the food going out of date... its just mad.

So none of us buy anything and thus everything’s for free? I’m in 🤭

Coop uses olio so people can collect it for free instead of it going in the bin, defo something to look at

Over here in Australia, Coles offers 80% off after 6pm for food expiring the next day

Just make it half the price and it’ll be gone who’s buying a sandwich for £2.75 to begin with!

Ok so the key question of the evening is;

What do Tesco sell that is so easily goes out of date and is so disgusting that the homeless people and staff don't want to eat it..

It won’t work because Tesco give the charity everything at 8pm so staff freebies and this 9.30pm won’t exist….

the bad thing is there will be a massive amount of people taking the free food when they arent even in need. IDC, way i see it if you have a job and an income you dont need £0.00 ham and cheese.
