What is the most important tool in Adobe Illustrator? Hi again, it’s Tom with Satori Graphics back with another graphic design Illustrator tutorial; today we take a look at why the most important tool in Adobe Illustrator is the pen tool. Of course this will come down to personal opinion, as there are so many tools in Illustrator, but I am sure many graphic designers will agree with me on my selection of the most important tool in Adobe Illustrator!

I hope if you are reading this then you have already seen the video, but yes the pen tool is in my opinion, the most important tool in Adobe Illustrator. The advantage of the pen tool in Adobe Illustrator is that it gives you absolute control over the curve. You don't draw a whole bunch of points and then hope the curve will look good. You can manipulate the curve to get the finest detail. It takes some getting used to, but Illustrator is the tool of choice for graphic artists.

The pen tool is the true important tool of this super powerhouse vector based program, from logo designing, digital art and illustrations, to typography design. The pen tool is the most important tool in Adobe Illustrator to me.

I LOVE the pen tool. I was scared to death and very frustrated with it's use in relation to bezier curves, but like you said, ...practice and a willingness to jump into the deep end, has, over time, turned it into my "go to" tool when I have to duplicate ANYTHING with complex/compound curves. Practice, indeed makes perfect. Thanks again.

I started using Illustrator on a pirated version of Beta .9 (late '87 or early '88), in which you had to work in wireframe mode and then preview afterwards. I remember having complex drawings taking several minutes to preview. This limitation made me learn to remember which shapes were on top of others, as previewing could really slow you down. I am a sculptor and I was immediately fascinated by the way the pen tool felt like working with pieces of wire twisting and bending them to make the shapes I wanted. I used it so intensely that I had several dreams that took place in the illustrator environment, and had a good career doing illustration and graphic design for almost 2 decades. I eventually drifted away from using it daily, but in the last couple of years I am using it more and more to create shapes to cut out on my laser cutter. Other tools like Affinity Designer come close to Illustrator, but don't quite have the same feel. I still can almost use the pen tool in my sleep, although many of the newer functions are exciting realms of discovery for me. Keep up the good work!

on point. i would have loved to have started using illustrator in 1987 but only got my chance in 2000....still NO regrets. the pen tool rules!

I'll give you an even better tip for the pen tool. If you haven't got the latest CC but want the versatility and more from the pen tool, go buy Vectorscribe and Inkscribe add on from their website, it's amazing. A lot of designers scrambled or panicked when CC was introduced but 99% of the new ugrades were still very much achievable if you are experienced in using Illustrator.

Yes, i do believe PEN TOOLS is very important tools for Professional Designer ...not only in AI, PS, ID, XD in all software without this we cannot do a perfect design :)

It is the most important tool. So Important I just wish it would be improved in photoshop... With the thin black lines in PS I can barely see them.
