Jaco Pastorius is without doubt one of the most important bass players to ever live and has inspired thousands, if not millions of bass players throughout the years...

As you'd guess, he's one of my fav all time bass players too... so the team and I here at SBL thought it was about time that we created a video dedicated to the life and bass playing of Jaco Pastorius.

It'd make my day if you checked it out... Ooo... and lemme know who you want us to feature next in this series.

As always, see you in the shed…

Scott :)

Thank you Scott for the fine Jaco presentation. My connection with Jaco was a sad short one. I am the neurologist who declared Jaco brain dead in a Fort Lauderdale hosp. Being a guitatist & bass player myself I was struck by the irony of being the one to perform such a task. Its something  l will never forget. Your wonderful summary of his life of this great talent should bring a smile to any musicians face. He brought his instrument to a level the rest of us can only dream of.   Thanks again :  Paul Calise MD

I will never forget when my mother cut out the clipping from the paper announcing his death and gave it to me. I cried my eyes out. It really broke my heart. Although I was a trumpet player, he really made an incredible impression on me. He death was before my Senior Trumpet recital I got together with a dear friend who was a great bass player and we composed a song in honor of him titled "A mother's embrace." Visions of his mother looking for her son as he left this earth was what inspired that song. God bless Jaco. Thank you Scott for doing such a beautiful job discussing his career and his short life. I couldn't help but cry for Jaco after watching this. I wish he were still with us. God only knows where his musical exploration would have taken him.

I met Jaco at a mutual friend's house here in Ft. Lauderdale in the early '70s. He was quiet, polite and very soft spoken. He had not yet reached worldwide fame. I didn't even know he was a musician. Little did I know what a talent he was and what world wide fame he would attain. He passed away way too soon but left an incredible, indelible mark in music.

I had a great friend in highschool who turned out to be a descendant of Jaco's. He was a clearly talented and passionate musician and for sure one of the kindest people I've met. I have no doubts that he carried a lot of Jaco's genes in him and I feel so positively about his spirit being passed on through him and whoever else is out there.

I NEVER would have thought to say this about the electric bass: but hearing these fluid and ultimately melodic bass lines make me cry, from sheer emotion aroused by this instrument. Jaco was a genius who did not play but FELT the bass.

Jaco had everything : groove, virtuosity, sonic identity, improvisation and compositional skills. That's something that can't be said for even the best contemporary bass players...to me he remains the best.

I read almost everything there was to read about jaco in these years, in my opinion this video represents one of the best portraits of jaco that can be found around. Full of competence, passion, respect for music. Bravo!

Scott and the rest of the team. You should all be extremely proud for putting together the absolute best 14 min long short documentary on the life of one of the most astonishing and influential bass players in modern history. Thank you all!

I never met Jaco, but his mom was my neighbor down the hall at Hidden Harbor in Wilton Manors, FL at the time of his passing. Such a huge loss she endured. It was difficult to witness.

I still remember one year in music camp the counselors needed a quick way to separate us bassists into beginner and advanced, so they just asked "Who's heard of Jaco Pastorius?" and if you didn't raise your hand you were put in the beginner class.

I used to hang out with Jaco on occasion in the early 80s. He was a nice guy (when his problems weren't rearing their ugly heads). And a MONSTER musician! The first concert I ever saw was Weather Report (Shakti opened up for them).

Back then, everybody had a "Jaco story." He was always up to some shenanigans. But I have a different Jaco story.

One evening, he and I were drinking in a bar in lower Manhattan. We were talking about music. Suddenly, out of nowhere, he said to me "I tell people I like to party and take chances, but the truth is, I want to stop drinking and doing drugs; but I don't know how." At the time, I was struggling with the same problem (I'm 30 years clean now), and I didn't know what to say. It sounded like a call for help, and I could do nothing. I felt truly useless, , ,

There's nobody like him. We were blessed to have had him among us. Thank you for making this video.

Got to say I am wowed by this video. Back in the day Jaco was all the rave to jazz musicians. After his death his legacy seemed to fade away. I am grateful that it has not and this video is an awesome contribution to him. Thank you for creating and sharing it with the world. Made my day.

Completely agreed.

I knew him in NYC when he'd play the Lone Star Cafe, weekly, gave bass lessons and played soccer in Washington Square... (and sadly, the drugs by night).

Never heard or saw anyone play like him, or JUMP OFF THE DAMN SECOND STORY BALCONY ONTO TABLES WHILE DOING IT AT THE LONE STAR!

To be honest, I had a hard time appreciating Jaco's style, but this video made it easier for me to understand how much of a genius he was. RIP.

There is no such thing as the greatest bass player in the world, however, Jaco was just that, THE GREATEST BASS PLAYER IN THE WORLD! He had it all, feel, good touch, originality, innovativeness, , insane technique, he could swing, he could groove, and had an ear for melody and harmony that most musicians will NEVER EVER even come close to. He was a genius on all levels.

Bootsy Collins would be a great.topic. He turned his bass into a lead soloing machine. His fuzz-drenched, space echoed bass solos in the middle of 'id rather be with you' in the 70s was sublime. 1977/1978, around that time. He got his start in James Brown's band until he and his brother Catfish got kicked out for tripping acid. Joined the Parliament Funkadelic army and bloomed. One of my fav bassists. And has the coolest looking, custom-made 'space bass'.

Jaco is proof of superheroes existing. In the 90's a Jaco CD just called out to me at a music shop. I got out to the car, put it in and sat in that parking lot with my mind blown and my life changed. Epic

Let’s not forget his groundbreaking work on Pat Metheny’s “Bright Size Life” album.
